Hello, ekaterinakuhl-ga!
The cleanroom consumables market is thriving due to the multitude of
uses for consumable products in a host of industries. While specific
UK statistics are practically non-existent without buying an expensive
market report, the array of UK companies combined with the global
statistics provided by the McIlvaine market research company lends
credence to the industry's viability.
McIlvaine Company does offer a comprehensive market research report
on the Cleanroom consumables market by country for a cost of $3700 per
year if you are interested.

Otherwise, I have compiled the only information I could find on the
UK market segment that is readily accessible online. I hope it will
provide an overview that is helpful to you.

GLOBAL PREDICTIONS AFFECT THE UK CONSUMABLES MARKET
====================================================
** Though the following forecasts are for the global market, they have
direct impact on the UK cleanroom consumables industry.
"Strength in pharmaceutical and biotech-nology, flat panel, and food
sectors will offset the weakness in the semiconductor sector for the
cleanroom hardware and consumables marketplace," says Robert W.
McIlvaine, President, The McIlvaine Co., a cleanrooms market research
concern in Northfield, IL. McIlvaine forecasts that by 2004, sales of
cleanroom hardware and consumables worldwide will rise above the 2000
peak of $6.5 billion and will continue rising through 2006 to $9.1
billion."
"McIlvaine forecasts the worldwide cleanroom consumables market
(clothing, wipes, furniture, laundry services, etc.) to rise to $4.7
billion in 2005, up from the actual of $3.3 billion in 2002."
"The cleanroom industry had been accustomed to double-digit growth
increases. However, for the period 2000 to 2006, annual growth in
hardware sales will be just 6% and consumables sales will be just 5%."
"Most of the growth will be in Asia, according to McIlvaine. Suppliers
to the industry will benefit unevenly from future growth. Those
emphasizing sterility and microbial control will continue to
experience rapidly growing markets, according to the report. Those
focused on particulate and inanimate contaminants will experience
slower growth through 2006."

The latest market predictions from McIlvaine Co. for the global sales
of cleanroom consumables:
"Sales of cleanroom consumables will exceed $5 billion worldwide in
2006. Glove sales will comprise 20 percent of the total followed by
disposable clothing, reusable clothing and wipes and swabs. Special
laundries are needed for processing reusable clothing. This business
alone will generate revenues to $1 billion in 2006.

UK RANKING FOR CLEANROOM SPACE TIED TO CONSUMABLES MARKET
=========================================================
"Over the next five years purchase of cleanroom consumables by the
pharmaceutical industry will grow by 32%. Worldwide sales of cleanroom
consumables will be $400 million this year. By 2005 consumables sales
will exceed $530 million. These are forecasts appearing in the
McIlvaine on-line market report World Cleanroom Markets 2000-2005.
Much of the growth is due to the expansion of biotechnology
applications. Growth in sales of biotech drugs is projected at 12-15
percent for each year through 2004. Those numbers should go even
higher after 2004 when more drugs make it through the pipeline.
* One measure of cleanroom activity in each country is cleanroom
space.

As I mentioned in my introduction, many industry statistics are tied
up in expensive market reports. The cleanrooms industry (along with
the consumables portion) tends to be one of those industries.
However, I sincerely hope this overview proves helpful.

Clarification of Answer by

Kate,
I have tried very hard to find breakdowns of UK financial figures but
I am really skeptical that they exist for free. I tried again this
morning before your clarification, and just spent another hour or so
looking in depth. I did have some emails out before I compiled your
original answer but have heard no reply.
I just made a personal phone call to Bob McIlvaine to see if he would
release any sources of free information, but the answer was an
emphatic "NO"! He said the information is very hard to obtain and that
is the reason they are able to charge such a high price for their
reports.
I also spent some time trying to find company financial figures
online but that was fruitless as well. The only suggestion I can make
is to make personal phone calls to some of the major cleanroom
consumable supply companies in the UK and see if they will provide you
some financial information. Although I cannot do so within the scope
of this question, you might consider taking the time, if necessary.
Even then, I don't know how far you will get in obtaining an overall
figure. Persistent digging might turn up a knowledgable person,
however.
I did find one other McIlvaine summary from 1998. Although it does
not contain dollar figures, it does rank countries by market share for
consumables such as gloves, clothing, and wipes.
The content of the summary follows:
"Many countries are cleanroom market leaders." Press Release.
McIlvaine Co. (October 1998)
http://www.mcilvainecompany.com/webtofc.html (Click tab for market
summaries)
"Seventy-two individual countries and eight sub regional groups
comprise 80 significant markets for cleanroom products and services.
Because cleanroom growth is highest in many of the countries with low
market share currently, it is increasingly important to analyze each
market separately. For example, by 2002 Israel will be purchasing l%
of all the new cleanroom equipment for the semiconductor industry. In
2002 with world chip demand rising Taiwanese wafer fabrication
facilities will purchase more than 11% of cleanroom equipment needed
by the worlds semiconductor industry. These forecasts are included in
the new country by country forecast of cleanroom purchases which is an
addendum to the McIlvaine report World Cleanroom Markets 1996-2000."
The spread of cleanroom technology to many industries beyond
semiconductors and pharmaceuticals results in a large number of
countries obtaining market leadership positions in specific
industries. For example, Singapore and Malaysia are the #l and #2
purchasers of clean room supplies in the world's disk drive industry.
Market leadership positions in various industries are as follows:
Aerospace
1. United States
2. France
3. Japan
4. Germany
5. United Kingdom
Disk Drive
1. Singapore
2. Malaysia
3. China
4. Japan
5. Thailand
Flat Panel
1. Japan
2. United States
3. Taiwan
4. France
5. South Korea
Pharmaceutical
1. United States
2. Japan
3. Germany
4. France
5. United Kingdom
Semiconductor
1. Japan
2. United States
3. South Korea
4. Taiwan
5. Germany
*** The above rankings are just for disposables such as gloves,
clothing, and wipes. The rankings for hardware purchases are different
and reflect the countries with the most new construction rather than
the largest production.
==
I really wish I could find the dollar figures for you, Kate. It is
frustrating for me as well, as I usually assume I will find something
if I dig hard enough. In this case, the dollar figures will probably
only come from a industry insider source or a big market report
expenditure.
Sincerely,
umiat
(If I DO ever get a helpful response from the emails I have sent out,
I will be sure to post them in a clarification)
