I am putting in a home theater system with a large plasma screen and a
high end AV receiver. All the components will be on a rack in a
closet. I want to be able to sit across the room with my laptop and
have the plasma screen (which has XGA input) display what is on my
laptop screen, while the audio from the laptop is going into the AV
receiver (the audio is the easy part).

I have a Wi-Fi network in the house and bluetooth on the laptop. I am
expecting to put put a computer in the closet, and am amenable to
purchasing a reasonable amount of hardware if necessary. How can I
make the computer in the closet "echo" what is happening on my laptop?

What about "echoing" what the computer in the closet has on your laptop screen?

No, I don't need to "echo" in the other direction. I expect to use
the closet computer primarily as a server. In addition to the TV, it
will also be connected to a printer and a scanner.

Do you have a TV "out" on your laptop graphics card?

I found the answer myself. The WiJet Wireless Projector/Monitor
Adapter by OTC Wireless. It transmits the video output over a
wireless network which you then connect to your monitor with a
standard VGA cable. The cost is about $350.
