Dear Jazzy Knicks,

Vauxhall themselves do not hide the fact that they are looking for
people who have skills, that are beyond their official qualifications.

The Vauxhall job application process consists of three parts. In the
first one, a standard application form (submitted by the candidate) is
reviewed. Shall they pass the first stage, the candidates undergo
through a psychometric online test. In the third stage, candidates who
passed successfully the first two stages are invited to ?a selection
day at Ellesmere Port or Luton. This may involve in-depth interviews
that may be supplemented by group and individual work activities, for
example role plays or simulation exercises. It will also include
further psychometric tests to verify previous online results" (Source:
Vauxhall Internet Site, "Selection Process",
<http://vauxhall.co.uk/careers/vauxhall/opportunities/undergrads-selection.html>).

So, what kind of skills is needed, in addition to your qualifications,
in order to pass these tests successfully?

Vauxhall mention five areas:
Team orientation
Openness to change
Entrepreneurial attitude
Passion for excellence
Customer orientation

About "team orientation", they say:
"You have this competency if you: ? seek others' ideas and suggestions
for solving problems
? consider the impact of your own actions on others
? exhibit a cooperative approach to solving business problems
? share knowledge and resources
? confront issues, not people
? resolve conflicts collaboratively
? build consensus
? treat people with respect
? accept and interact with people of different cultures
? show sincere interest in others and their concerns. "

About Openness to change:

"You have this competency if you: ? challenge work methods and systems
? are open to ideas offered by others
? adjust when implemented approaches do not work
? are willing to shift priorities
? accept criticism openly and non-defensively
? demonstrate an appropriate level of patience
? deal with stress effectively
? cope with new situations effectively."

About Entrepreneurial attitude:

"You have this competency if you: ? generate ideas spontaneously to
improve work processes
? initiate activities without being told to do so
? handle company resources as if they are your own
? take an ownership role in your area of responsibility
? take action beyond explicit job responsibilities
? mobilise others to take action. "

About Passion for excellence:

"You have this competency if you: ? set high standards of performance
for yourself and others
? pursue aggressive goals and work hard to achieve them
? are willing to put in extra time where needed
? display a high energy level
? evaluate products against standards
? ask 'why' until the root cause of a problem is discovered
? exhibit a personal energy to achieve excellence."

By Customer orientation they say:

You have this competency if you: ? make efforts to understand customers' needs
? are receptive to customer feedback
? regard customer problems as your own
? show genuine concern for, and commitment to, customer service
? respond quickly and accurately to customers' needs
? continually search for ways to increase customer satisfaction
? give priority to serving customers' needs
? are pleasant and courteous when interacting with customers

Now, in addition to that, every vacancy has, naturally, its own
requirements. It should be mentioned, that according to its site,
Vauxhall recruits right now only undergraduates (no
graduates/post-graduates), and that scientific positions at entry
level are limited to chemical scientists (mostly chemical engineers),
as well as computer scientists. Many other vacancies are not for
scientists per-se, but for engineers who hold a Bachelor of Science
(BSc) Degree.
