I am looking for information on compensation (salary and benefits) for
executive directors of non-profits in the San Francisco Bay area, and
in particular in, but not limited to, the environmental sector.

Request for Question Clarification by pafalafa-ga on 20 Oct 2003 18:13 PDT
If you can list one or two organizations of particular interest, it
may be possible to find out the actual compensation for senior
executives for fairly recent (circa 2001) timeframes.

Here are a few examples of such environmental non profit organizations
in the SF Bay Area:

- California Native Plant Society
- Global Futures Foundation (www.globalff.org)
- California Invasive Plant Council (http://www.cal-ipc.org) - was the
California Exotic Pest Plant Council until last month
- The Oaks Foundation (http://www.californiaoaks.org/)
- California Institute for Biodiversity (www.calalive.org/)
- Point Reyes Bird Observatory

Locating relevant salary survey results might be another way to answer
this question.

Hello ichneumon-ga,

Many organizations are reluctant to reveal their salary and benefits
structures so salary information is frequently difficult to obtain. On
the other hand, some nonprofit organizations seem to be fairly open
about their budgets and salaries. It might be worthwhile for you to
call the comparable organizations you’ve listed and ask them for the
relevant salary information.

Fortunately, there are a lot of resources available for investigating
nonprofit salaries. I’ve organized what I’ve found into several
categories to help you sort out the results.

Reviewing the salary levels in the individual job postings I’ve found
in comparison to the regional and national salary surveys shows that
there is tremendous variation in salary levels for the same “Executive
Director” position title. These variations depend on many factors,
including: organization funding, size, budget, staffing, mission,
marketing savvy, community support, general popularity and many
others.

The articles I’ve located show that the current slow economy has
impacted nonprofit organizations and salaries are stagnant, staffing
is getting cut and donations are suffering. You may want to research
the situation of the nonprofit organizations you’re interested in so
that you can tailor your expectations based on what your research
reveals.

I trust that the information I’ve found will meet your needs.

Best wishes for your project -- job search?

Though all 10 categories reported increases from 2001 to 2002, four
were less than 1 percent growth.

The national average projected pay for 2002 for the 10 positions are:

4. Nonprofit Compensation: Determining Factors
Issues of non-profit accountability and a few high-six-figure
non-profit executive compensation packages have become hot topics in
the scandal-loving worlds of media and government. At the same time,
most non-profit employees and job seekers are finding salaries
continue to remain below for-profit sector levels. What are the
realities of non-profit salaries? Do non-profit sector employees make
as much as the allegations say?
