There are many different occupational functions that user the title
"researcher", such as people who conduct surveys, and researchers like
myself. Do you mean researchers as those working in the laboratories
developing new products (e.g., R&D = Research and Development)?

R&D is a good way to describe it. Definitely not researchers
conducting surveys, but rather researchers involved in new
discoveries, such as, but not limited to, chemists, biologists,
genetecists, microbiologists, etc. etc. Please let me know if further
clarification is required.

Hello aventurer-ga,
I have found some fairly detailed information about the professional
research community worldwide, but before I can answer your question, I
need to know if you are asking about researchers in all scientific
disciplines (physics, engineering, etc) or only in the biosciences.
Your question suggests the latter, but if time allows (your question
expires in a few days), it would be helpful to get a bit more detail
from you before I post an answer.
Thanks.

Arrrrgh!
The information is out there....I know it is. But it's so scattered,
that I haven't found a manageable way yet to consolidate it.
However, there's an awful lot of data that HAS been neatly assembled
on the size of the global R&D community, including total number of R&D
workers in the world (4.6 million), total R&D expenses broken out by
education, industry and governments, data for individual power house
countries and industry segments, and so on.
If you would like me to provide summaries of -- and links to -- these
sources as an answer to your question, please let me know....fast.
The clock's a-ticking.
