Hello again mysticcat-ga,
What a fascinating topic youve posed!
Ive collected a variety of market research reports and articles that
discuss the size of this market. As I continued my research it became
clear that when anti-aging products go beyond cosmetic products.
Cosmeceuticals are a bridge toward drug/medical treatments. Cosmetic
surgery and injectables are a major segment of the anti-aging market
as are various medications and alternative medicine products.
Im sorry I couldnt locate the figures for what the average woman
will spend on anti-aging products. I believe the links Ive found will
give you a better understanding of this broad subject. You may want to
pose additional questions after youre reviewed this research.
Best wishes for your project.

COSMECEUTICAL
While the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act does not recognize the term
"cosmeceutical," the cosmetic industry uses this word to refer to
cosmetic products that have medicinal or drug-like benefits.
The Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act defines drugs as those products that
cure, treat, mitigate or prevent disease or that affect the structure
or function of the human body. While drugs are subject to a review and
approval process by FDA, cosmetics are not approved by FDA prior to
sale. If a product has drug properties, it must be approved as a drug.

Is It a Cosmetic, a Drug, or Both? (or Is It Soap?)
The legal difference between a cosmetic and a drug is determined by a
product's intended use. Different laws and regulations apply to each
type of product. Firms sometimes violate the law by marketing a
cosmetic with a drug claim, or by marketing a drug as if it were a
cosmetic, without adhering to requirements for drugs.

The New Face of Anti-Aging Treatments
Products coming to market could soon be adding some worry lines to the
nonsurgical cosmetic-treatment leader, Botox
Face-lifts used to be the treatment of choice for folks bothered by
wrinkles and sagging. But then shots of a little poison known as Botox
changed all that. People still opt for plastic surgery these days, but
Botox injections have become must-have maintenance for many folks
hoping to forestall the day they go under the knife.
Demand for Botox should continue so long as aging baby boomers remain
obsessed with preserving their youth. New York City-based market
researcher FIND/SVP predicts that spending on anti-aging cosmetic
treatments of all kinds will reach about $11 billion by 2007, up from
about $7.6 billion in 2002. And while nonsurgical procedures overall
have taken a hit amid a tough economy, declining 23% in 2002, they've
been rising in recent years, up more than three-fold since 1997, says
the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
Soon, however, Botox may have to fight for shelf space with a number
of other products. A new crop of injectable treatments, several of
which are already under review at the FDA, will likely be clamoring
for attention within the year.

Opportunities in the $45 Billion Anti-Aging Market:
How to Win in the Fight to Stay Young
U.S. consumers are expected to spend close to $45 billion on
anti-aging products by the end of 2003, and it's predicted sales will
top $56 billion by 2007. Can your business afford to ignore this
market? As our nation's 78 million Baby Boomers become increasingly
unsettled about looking and feeling old, there are numerous
opportunities for marketers to take advantage of this anti-aging
market. This Brief goes beyond the hype to show you the not-so-obvious
areas with growth potential - think Botox parties and exercise bikes
with Internet access! As the Baby Boomer market ages, health clubs are
booming, as are anti-aging spas, collagen injections, dental
whitening, cosmetic surgery, and vitamin-enriched "cosmeceuticals" and
"nutraceuticals" that help fight aging from inside and out. If you're
interested in a share of a vast market segment that is poised for
further growth, you'll want to read this Brief today. A $995 value

NEW ANTI-AGING MARKET CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR MARKETERS
From The August/Sepember 2003 Issue of Natural Grocery Buyer
Natural Personal Care Products Bring Glow to Retail Sales
Anti-aging products. Baby boomers are searching for a new wrinkle in
skin care products. Norwalk, Conn.-based market researcher Business
Communications Co. says sales of anti-aging products reached $6.7
billion in 2001 and could soar to $8.7 billion by 2006.
Women ages 30 to 50 believe "people should do whatever they wish to
slow down the signs of aging," according to the 1999 Wrinkle Report
prepared by the Harris Interactive polling firm. Sixteen percent of
the 1,200 women surveyed believe moisturizers can prevent wrinkles;
another 6 percent opt for wrinkle cream.
Naturals manufacturers have been quick to capitalize on this desire to
look young. Burt's Bees' Healthy Treatment skin care line, which is
targeted to women in their 40s and 50s, will likely be introduced into
grocery stores within the next year or two, says company President
Roxanne Quimby.
