Dear jsteinsb-ga;

No problem… Garry Kasparov is not alone of course but appears to be a
leader the field in of unorthodox etiquette when it comes to chess:

“As expected, Kasparov, for the first time in his career, breached the
etiquette of the game when he declined to shake the hand of his
opponent.”

“Back then there was bad blood between Kasparov and Korchnoi. They
refused to shake hands and accused each other of employing dirty
tricks.”

“An irate Garry Kasparov refused to shake hands with Alexei Shirov for
the latter’s unwillingness to retract his statement directed against
the former’s match with Kramnik late last year. Kasparov’s pieces did
the bombardment in a brilliantly conducted game, which saw Shirov
leaving the game red-faced. Kasparov, in the post-game conference,
revealed that it was the eve of his father’s death anniversary."

“When I drew a long game with him at a simultaneous display three
years ago, Kasparov was so angry he refused to shake hands, though we
have been acquainted for nearly a decade. Yet towards Kramnik he has
been courteous, even graceful, in defeat. He appears not to care any
more.”

“As game 8 was about to start, Korchnoi was left with his hand in
midair when Karpov refused to shake with him -- 'Never! Never will I
shake hands with you!" Roshal explained during the next press
conference, 'Recent events have shown that the Challenger has not
reduced his line of intensifying tensions and under such circumstances
Karpov does not wish to shake hands with Korchnoi.”
