Question ID: 268812
hi JoseLeon,

I have two questions for this project that I believe go together.

First you will now find the complete copy of the web site with all
your work and modifications in a directory called jdir. Now in the
root directory is my actual web site files, some of which have the
same name but are very different from the files you worked on.

One of the reasons for the differences is that my site works ok in
IE5.5, IE6.0 and Netscape 6.2 but is terrible in Mozilla and
Netscape7.1 because of the pop-ups appearing when they aren't called.
One of the differences between your version of the files now in the
jdir directory and the version now in the root directory, is that an
attempt was made to hide the pop-ups for Netscape7.1. So now they
still appear, but they hide themselves after they appear.

My two requests for this project are the following:

A)That you incorporate the modifications you made to the files in the
previous post (now located in jdir) into the files now in the root
directory.

B)And to make the necessary code changes so the pop-ups don't appear
in Netscape 7.1 - so the web site acts the same in IE and Netscape.
Notice I fixed the search_form.php, but I'm not sure how to fix the
header and other starting files.

As before, a tip of $50.00 will be included at the completion of this
request, fair?

Thank you.
Steve

Hello, stevep234:
Before accept this question, please, let me investigate a bit,
because port an IE compliant site full of DHTML/JS to Mozilla/Netscape
it's a very hard work. Let me see, I will contact you asap.

Regards.

Clarification of Question by stevep234-ga on 23 Oct 2003 12:28 PDT
hi JoseLeon,
I think most of the problem is in the start-up of the page. It
displays the pop-overs in Netscape 7.1 onload, but not in IE or old
Netscape browsers. Is it possible to have a script that will sense
which browser the user has, and will use a different php file, for
example, depending on the users browser?
Thanks.

Hi,
Have you decided you don't want the question?
Please let me know.
And let me know which files you changed in completing the previous posted question.
Thank you.

Hello, stevep234:
I'm still on it, but today I have been really busy, tomorrow I have
free all the day and I will solve your problem, I think it could be
done, I just need to make some more tests. Another question:

-Why can't you copy all the files in jdir to your root directory and
use it? I supose I was working on the last version of the site, isn't
it? Why I can't copy all the files and overwrite the root ones?

Regards.

Clarification of Question by stevep234-ga on 24 Oct 2003 12:41 PDT
hi,

Somebody else changed some of those files, and I don't know which ones
he changed. He made them so they would work with the database, and
I'm afraid of loosing that work. He also, on his own, tried to make
it work with Netscape7.1, so now I don't know which files he changed
to work with the database and which files he changed only to try and
make it work with NS7.1. He was doing that at the same time you were
answering the last questions. I did not want conflicts with him
changing files at the same time you were changing files, so I kept
them separate.

Now at this point I no longer know which files he changed and which
files you changed and I don't know what to do. I was just trying to
get the web site done as quick as possible as I've been working on it
almost a year. I'm good at html, he's somewhat good at everything
except javascript, and you're good at everything, except I did not
know you when I started this web site.

I am open to any suggestions you may have on how it should be done and
how I should proceed from here.

Thank you.

Hello, stevep234:
No problem, I will download both sites, I will find the differences
between files using a diff tool and I will integrate my changes into
the code of the root dir. Don't worry, but just give me some time, ok?

Hello, stevep234:
I have finished merging my changes into your website, here are the
files:

http://www.qadram.com/root.zip

Be sure to backup your existing site before overwrite it. It would be
better to delete all your files from the root directory and upload the
contents of the zip file, because I have deleted some tests scripts
the other developer left in the root dir.

Please, test all the tasks I did in my previous answer and don't
hesitate to request any clarification if you find any problem. When
you think everything works ok, I will start to modify it to make it
work in Mozilla/NS.

Regards.

hi,
Sorry I did not get back to you earlier.
Yes, please do start working with the Mozilla/NS problem.
It seems as though all the files are working with your modifications.
I will let you know if I have any questions about them.
Thanks.

NS/Mozilla?

hi JoseLeon,
Thank you, I believe that is the only problem I have with
Mozilla/Netscape.
Are the files now in the root of the-battery-shoppe.com? I will test
and if it works ok, I will accept your answer and close this question
and post my next question in this forum for you.
Thank you.

Clarification of Question by stevep234-ga on 27 Oct 2003 18:07 PST
Hi JoseLeon,
It looks great, and seems to load faster too. Works perfect in IE but
now in NS7.1 when a pop-up link is clicked, the pop-ups give an error
After they come up; and they give an error when the "close this box
link" is clicked (but not the close button in the corner). The error
message is:

Error: uncaught exception: Permission denied to get
Property.Window.mep1

Check the OEM pop-up on the first page to see what I mean.
The second thing is the underline is the wrong color in the pop-ups in
NS7.1. I believe its called link "decoration" but I'm not sure how to
set its color. If you could do that for the "OEM" pop-up and the
"Free Shipping" pop-up, on the home page, then I'm sure I can copy
that code to the other pop-ups.
Those are the only problems I see left with Mozilla/NS compatability.
Thank you again.
Steve

Hello, stevep234:
What I think it's happening it's the following:

-The OEM link points to "javascript:"
-This command makes NS 7.1 to show up the Javascript Console
-And when the Javascript Console is up, you see an error that
happened "before" you clicked on the link, because the console is a
log, so stores all the javascript error messages until you press the
clear button

To get convinced that this is your problem, before click on any link,
show the Javascript console and after that, click on a javascript:
link, you will see the same, because popup a link doesn't produce an
error.

To prevent javascript: links to popup the Javascript Console, change
them to:

href="javascript: //"

So instead an empty javascript link, you put a comment. I have changed
one of the links to OEM in your index.php page, please, check it out.

Regarding the link color, could you post some screenshots somewhere?
It's easier for me to understand the problem, the link background
"hover" color in your index.page it's yellow, and in the popups it's
ping, but looks the same in IE and in NS, so I don't know where the
problem is.

Regards.

Clarification of Question by stevep234-ga on 28 Oct 2003 11:35 PST
hi JoseLeon,

You are right about the javascript log error box and href="javascript:
//" solves it perfectly.

One other problem I did not notice before, is when a pop-up is closed
by the "X" link in the upper corner, it resizes the entire browser
screen. It makes the browser window not set at maximize. The close
box link at the bottom center of the pop-ups does not resize the
browser screen, but I don't know how to change or fix the upper corner
close X link to act the same.

Regarding the links inside a pop-up, every time I do a screen capture,
or highlight copy and paste, the link colors change to the correct
color. It is only from the server in Netscape 7.1 only, that the link
underlines inside a pop-up appears a light yellow or light green
color. The link text and hover-over background colors are correct.
Can the link underline colors in the pop-overs be forced to be set to
the same dark blue color as the link text inside the pop-overs? The
yellow or green link underlines are most noticeable in a pop-over like
"FREE_SHIPPING.php" but the yellow or green link underline color can
also be seen in the "close this box link" at the bottoms of pop-overs
like the OEM pop-over as an example.
Thank you.

Hello, stevep234:

Regarding the weird effect on NS when resizing the browser window
when it's maximized, there is this code on your windowing system:

function ns6bugfix(){
 if(ns6)setTimeout('self.resizeBy(0,1); self.resizeBy(0,-1);', 100);
}

And it's called in a lot of places, I have commented the line and the
problem it's solved in NS7.1, works very well and no problems at all,
if you find something on this matter, please, tell me.

Regarding the link colors, I have fixed it by changing the A css
style, so now, the underline color it's #000066 instead yellow,
please, check it out and tell me if everything it's ok.

Regards.

Clarification of Question by stevep234-ga on 28 Oct 2003 16:59 PST
Hi,

The fix for the browser window resize has been taken care of. I don't
see any more evidence of that problem.

That only leaves the link colors - they are really bad now. Unclicked
links in the top_links.php file, and nav_bar file, and footer are not
yellow, like they should be, they are now dark blue and cannot be
easily seen.

The problem with the link colors was Only inside the text area of the
pop-overs. And in the pop-overs, the link underlines are still light
yellow or light green, except the bottom "close this box" link, which
is now acceptable. Be sure to refresh your NS7.1 browser with
Ctrl-F5, on the-battery-shoppe.com home page, then click the "Free
Shipping" pop-over and you will see what I mean. There are not many
links in a pop-over and perhaps they could be corrected individually
with a span or div tag, but I'm not sure how to do that.

But please put the other link colors back the way they were.

Thanks.

Steve

As soon as I figure out how to do a screen capture, I will let you
know.

Clarification of Question by stevep234-ga on 28 Oct 2003 21:13 PST
hi JoseLeon,

I have included different screen captures with explanations in a file
called screen_shots1.doc Download it from my web site and use
Microsoft Word to open it. I think it might be more clear than my
explanation above.

I also saved a page called home2.html. But I think the Word document
will show better what I'm trying to say.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Hello, stevep234:
I have returned back the link color to yellow, and I have also fixed
the problem with yellow underlines, you need to enclose the link into
an span tag this way:

<SPAN class=link2><a href=""></a></span>

I have fixed the FREE_SHIPPING.php script.

Regarding the problem you have with moving windows, does this problem
happen always? Could you post the steps to reproduce it? It works
perfectly here, but maybe I'm doing things in a different way.

Regards.

Clarification of Question by stevep234-ga on 29 Oct 2003 12:07 PST
hi JoseLeon,

The problem with the window moving or resizing is fixed. Everything
seems to be perfect now, except the link underline colors in the text
area of the pop-ups. When you click on the FREE-SHIPPING link on the
home page, does the links inside the pop-up have dark blue text but
green underlines? I'm trying to have the link underlines be the same
color as the link text.
Thanks.

Hello, stevep234:

Ok, link2 visited has green color, so I have created a new style,
link3, so you have to use it on the spans this way:

<SPAN class=link3><a href=""></a></span>

I hope everything works now, NS it's really weird for some things...
;-)

I believe that completes everything here. I can close it out now, and
post the next question for you. You'll be happy to know the next
question has nothing to do with pop-ups or pop-overs.
Thanks.

Hello, stevep234:

Ok, after all the clarifications, here is the answer to your
question.

The first part was a matter to download both copies and use a
difference tool (Beyond Compare) to check out differences between
files and integrate my changes into the root version.

The second part was a matter of fix the javascript to don't show
popups on startup using Mozilla and some fixes on the CSS style sheet.

Again, thanks for trust in me and no problem if there are more
popups/popovers, I'm ready for anything ;-)

Regards.
