I have to write a 2500 word term paper for a business law course, and
it can be on any aspect of the law. The paper must have numerous cases to
support it, and the professor does not want many of the sources to be
opinion based. I have thought about writing the paper on how the court
system does not do enough to protect the average investor from
corporate frauds. I wanted ot use examples from Enron, WorldCom,
Marth Stewart, and perhaps others. I am having trouble finding cases
that would support my argument. My question for you is, where should
I look, and at what specific cases. Or if my topic will not have
enough facts to back it up, perhaps you could suggest another one
which would be more suitable and easier to research, and where I could
get research for that topic. I was also curious if there is a website
that summerizes law cases. I am open to anything. Thanks a lot.

Dear luminox17-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.

Because of the recent and still evolving nature (and in some cases
ongoing nature) of the scandals involving Enron and Worldcom and the
alleged scandal supposedly involving Ms. Stewart, I highly recommend
you choose another topic unless you just want to really challenge
yourself with this assignment. The final shoe with regard to the Enron
and Worldcom debacles has yet to drop since legislation is still being
demanded in many judicial circles to prevent future oversights and
insure appropriate satisfaction if they should reoccur. As for Martha
Stewart’s troubles of course, the case is really in it’s infancy in
terms of what impact it might have on consumer protection in the
future. There are of course no case summaries on cases that have not
been heard so to use her legal situation as one of your examples would
limit you to speculation at best.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and take you up on the “suggestion”
route you alternatively alluded to. I recommend you choose a topic for
which a great deal of rulings exist and spare yourself the effort of
drudging up data where data might not exist. There are a number of
topics that fit this description and for which an abundance of
information is readily available in publication and on the internet.
Below for example I have chosen issues related to copyright law.

As you know copyright laws are being hotly debated and while the issue
is still current, legal precedents are being set daily. If your
readers don’t know what’s going on in this legal arena they're truly
living in caves somewhere on remote islands. The far reaching impact
is a closely scored game in progress and plays out like a legal soap
opera with millions of interested viewers glued to their screens just
to see what’s happening next. Unlike Enron and Worldcom what happens
here is much more "real" to common folks and will eventually touch us
all in some form or another. Your legal paper can be brilliantly
written piece and at the same time be a practical topic that all your
readers can relate to. Here are some wonderful resources that can
provide you with more information than you’d probably ever require for
compiling a 2500 word term paper on the subject, not to mention what
is available in abundance in print in the form of current event media
publications and law books:

As you can clearly see, the direction you take your term paper can be
virtually endless. Copyright laws have been around a long time and
have quite a historical past. In more recent times of course this
issue has been expanded to electronic media, ownership, and fair
usage, but more infamously are the hotbed topics being debated as we
speak with regard to entities like Napster, the music industry, and
activities such as trade, dissemination and royalties.

You may choose to take your paper in the direction of how copyrights
once primarily protected the works of notable authors against lurking
literary thieves seeking to exploit their creativity and purloin their
precious words in an effort to get rich themselves, to how greedy,
multi-billion dollar, powerhouse industries are now suing children and
grandmothers over their unauthorized use of their $12 CD’s and the
unauthorized display of their company logos.

Likewise, should you choose a different approach, there is ample
information out there to support a paper on the evolution of
copyrights and how in so many years it has grown from a simplified
means of protecting ones literary rights to a confounding
conglomeration of complicated laws aimed at protecting the rights of
everything from written words to crafted images to web pages
on-the-fly. It might be interesting to challenge your readers and
speculate what the future holds for the copyright as well, since
clearly, Mark Twain could never have predicted what we are seeing
today, neither can we envision our own future and what it will hold
for these laws tomorrow.

Here are some other topics of business law for which an abundance of
information can also be found. Any once of these can be equally
substituted for the one I mentioned above and leave you with a lot
less research than the recent corporate scandals will surely require:

Just my first reaction: Enron, WorldCom, and Martha Stewart cases are
too recent to have made their way through the court system. There are
probably few, if any, published decisions in these cases.

Perhaps you should think of an issue that was big several years ago,
since there could be some completed cases on that issue by now.
