For a small concern - consider using a spreadsheet.

Spreadsheets are very powerful and flexible tools. You can devise a
double-entry system quite easily.

While this solution is free, I'd discourage you from trying to do your
accounting on a spreadsheet.

No doubt, it can be done, but it takes a fair amount of spreadsheet
knowledge and a 'better than fair' knowledge of accounting. In my
opinion, its a bit 'too' flexible and you can get into a jam if you
don't know what you're doing (even for a small business).

Accounting software packages are designed to implement controls and
helps to prevent you from making critical mistakes.

Just my opinion, but I do have a bit of experience with this (have
used million dollar software packages and have also done it for small
businesses on a spreadsheet).

Have you considered using NOLA [http://nola.noguska.com/]. It is a PHP
application and it can be used by using a web browser. This allows
anyone to securely access your company's inventory, point of sale,
contact management databases, billing, purchasing and reporting from
anywhere. Though you will need to have some idea of PHP , MySQl &
Apache to use it. You can download it from http://tucows.com and it is
licensed under GPL

Give the Lazy8 Ledger a whirl. You can download it from the Lazy8
homepage at http://www.lazy8.nu/. It's Open Source, so it won't cost
you anything to try. It's written in Java and should run on your Mac
with no problem.

Lazy8 can be used for both business and personal accounting; however,
it assumes you have some double entry bookkeeping experience.
