Question ID: 269210
What percentage of women over 80 years old in the United States are in
nursing homes?

Request for Question Clarification by tutuzdad-ga on 23 Oct 2003 17:00 PDT
I found data from 1985, 1995 and 1997 that gives the figures for
nursing home residents in age ranges 65-74, 75-84, 85-and older per
1000 population.

For example ONLY: 14.4 men per 1000 men aged 74-84 are in nursing
homes
Other statistics of course include other age ranges and genders.

The data refers to the nursing home resident population only of
course. Persons residing in personal care or domiciliary care homes
are excluded from this graph.

Does this sound like a suitable answer to you?

Yes, 1999 data by gender and ages divided into these ranges would be
sufficient. Thank you.

Dear patty6683-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.

Pay a visit to the CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION site
called NATIONAL CENTER FOR HEALTH STATISTICS – FAST FACTS A TO Z:
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/anemia.htm

Near the bottom of the page is a link entitled NATIONAL NURSING HOME
SURVEY
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/about/major/nnhsd/nnhsd.htm

On this page, under the heading DATA HIGHLIGHTS, you will see an
article entitled NUMBER AND RATES OF CURRENT RESIDENTS BY SELECTED
CHARACTERISTICS. This will lead you to an ftp site that will ask you
for your password. Make sure the “anonymous” button is check and just
click OK. The article will open and here is where you will find the
statistics for 1999 which explains in detail the number of nursing
home patients of both genders broken down by the age groups I
mentioned.

If you are interested in other breakdowns, past data or future
projections, a good source to consult is the ADMINISTRATION ON AGING:
http://www.aoa.gov/prof/Statistics/future_growth/aging21/aging_21.asp

and the FEDERAL INTERAGENCY FORUM ON AGING-RELATED STATISTICS
http://www.agingstats.gov/tables%202001/tables.html
SPECIFICALLY: “Indicator 30 Nursing Home Utilization”
http://www.agingstats.gov/tables%202001/tables-healthcare.html#Indicator%2030

I hope you find that my research exceeds your expectations. If you
have any questions about my research please post a clarification
request prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating
and your final comments and I look forward to working with you again
in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.
