I need the lyrics for a song I heard back in the '70s on station KPFK
in Los angeles: "The Icecaps are melting, the tide is rushing in". I
have not been able to trace a recording, or even the words or title.

Greetings Readerjim:

There is a song titled "The Rollin' Blackout Blues" at
http://www.enter.net/~torve/songs/blackout.html and the last verse is
as follows:

"The ice caps are melting
    The sea's begun to rise
The ice caps are melting
    The sea's begun to rise
Bringin' saltwater to the wealthy
And bitter tears to my eyes"

Could this be the song you are seeking?

Best regards,
journalist-ga

PS - Tiny Tim sang a song "The Ice Caps Are Melting" - it began "The
ice-caps are melting, tra-la-la-la. All the world is drowning,
tra-la-la-la-la"

See http://www.thelastcool.com/dh2k/html/icecaps.html for the song
title reference (bottom of page) and the lyrics above are referenced
at http://lists.gnupg.org/pipermail/gnupg-users/2000-May/005619.html

I think the Tiny Tim song is probably part of the original. The
Rollin' Blackout Blues doesn't seem to go with the tune I recall.
Thanks! Maybe we are on the right track with Tiny. If only he had
sung words instead of tra-la-la...!

According to http://www.laweekly.com/ink/00/52/music-whiteside.php
"His 1968 Reprise debut, God Bless Tiny Tim, was a sensation, a
concept album of cultural mutations on solid par with either Sgt.
Pepper or Pet Sounds. (Doubt it? You’ve probably never sat down and
listened to the damn thing.) Among the Tin Pan Alley
hearts-and-flowers trills, the record featured apocalyptic visions
(“The Ice Caps Are Melting”)..."

However, the song isn't listed by that name on the Amazon used CD
reference at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000007PEP/102-1593982-7755303?v=glance
or at http://strangetimes.netfirms.com/mbtt.htm so I'm not certain
when it was offered on a recording. At
http://www.gajoob.com/interviews/joe_newman.html the song is
referenced as being from Tim's second album.

At http://musicmoz.org/Bands_and_Artists/T/Tiny_Tim/Discography/ the
second album is cited as "For All My Little Friends" - I scanned the
song titles at two discography compilations and I think the name of
the song is not "The Ice Caps Are Melting" but a different title with
those words in the lyrics.

The official Tiny Tim site is at http://www.tinytim.org/index.html and
their contact page is at http://www.tinytim.org/contact.html - you may
wish to contact them and inquire about the entire lyrics and proper
title of the song.

Good luck and I wish I could have thoroughly answered your question.
Perhaps another Researcher will know the song and be able to confirm
the lyrics for you. :)

Best regards,
journalist-ga
