I have a "Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2" tv capture device. I can use WinTV
2000 to capture video, but I would prefer to use a different
application. Unfortunately, both of the other applications I tried
both say the same thing. They say that the video device is already in
use.

However, there's nothing in my taskbar and I don't see anything in the
task manager processes list that looks like something that would be
using the capture card.

So what can I do? I've searched the web for info on this and have
found a number of places where people ask this question, but no one
gives an answer besides something along the lines of "stop the stuff
that's using the device". Obviously, if I could figure out what was
using the device then I would just do that. But I don't, so I can't.

My OS is Win2k. The capture card is labeled "WinTV PVR2 USB Personal
Video Recorder" on the box. The 2 other programs I've tried are "AVI
IO" and "VirtualDub".

Hi,

Most programs that are launched at startup either come from the
startup folder or the following branch in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Can you please look at both and see if any Haupaugge software is run
automatically from there. You might want to make a backup of the
registry branch first. If you need any help with manipulation the
registry, please let me know.
When you've had a look please let me know what you find.

Thanks.

I use a program called "Startup Control Panel 2.7" which allows me to
see all programs in the 5 places where things can run when windows
starts up. On the "HKLM / Run" tab, it lists a bunch of different
programs, but none looks to me like it's Haupauge or WinTV related.
There's the ATI Control Panel, some Creative USB SBAudigy 2 NX stuff,
my VPN software, iPodManager, McAfeeUpdaterUI, PowerMate, SbUJsb
AudCtrl (presumably more SBAudigy stuff), Network Associates
virusscane (presumably related to the McAfeeUpdaterUI), Soundman.exe
(don't know what this is, but I assume it's more SBAudigy stuff),
SunJavaUpdateSched (I don't know what the Java updater is there for),
TPP Auto Loader (I don't know what this one is), UpdReg.exe (I don't
know what this one is either), X-keys, and ZoneAlarm.

Also in "HKCU / Run" there's MIDIDef.exe (don't know about that one),
and Start WingMan Profiler.

None of those things looks relevant to the problem as far as I can
tell.
