Your question is still a little broad. There is an entire field devoted to what you're talking about. Also, there is no organisation that collates statistics on the internal communications of organisations. Nethertheless, there are SOME articles that might be of interest here. Alchien and Demsetz are two prominent authors in the field of transactions cost economics (although, I can't remember the name of their nobel prize winning paper off the top of my head). Another author you may want to consult is Peter Drucker, who founded management science as a field of study and still writes today! (He's in his 90's). I highly recommend his books.
