Question ID: 269907
I need to print to a Gestetner DSC38 network printer in my office; (I
am the only Mac user)the plugin they provide works only with OS9. We
need to enter a five-digit code in order to authenticate to the
printer. In Windows, we enter this under the Printing Preferences
dialogue box/Statistics. Is there any way, via Applescript or Unix by
which I can connect to and authenticate to this printer?

I can see the printer and can "print" to it, but without the code, the
print job goes into oblivion.

Hello jimwa,

I have found a driver for your printer.

You may download it here:
http://us.support.ricoh.com/html_g/model/p3800c/p3800cen.htm
... (scroll down the page to find the Mac OS X plug-ins)
I just tried downloading the files and the worked fine (no corruption;
archives expanded properly with Stuffit Expander).

The "Printer Utility" requires Mac OS X 10.1.x or 10.2.1 and later.
The PPD driver requires Mac OS X 10.1.x or later.

However, the ReadMe for the PPD driver notes the following:
---------
[5] Restrictions and Notification about the use of this PPD File
*Following features are not available with MacOS X PostScript driver.
    User ID
    User Code
    Sample Print
    Locked Print
    Document Server
    Custom Size
---------

Therefore, the password feature may not be supported by this driver.

Let me know if it does work.

Hope it works,

- supermacman-ga

Thank you for the response! As you presumed, this does not work with
the needed authentication code. I have tried the Gestetner and now the
Ricoh drivers - somewhere on Gestetner's site they say that they have
not yet updated their OSX drivers.

Thank you again.

Do the OS 9 drivers work in classic and let you print from classic applications?

If so, can you authenticate under classic and then print from OS X?
