i'm searching for a book. in fact, i just need the title. its a
children's book... similar to
THE ELEVENTH HOUR by graeme base. anyways... this book was written (i
believe)in the late 70s/early 80s... but maybe
it wasn't. it was similar to ELEVENTH HOUR in that it
had similar drawings...
the story goes like this:
there was a hare....
he had visited the moon...
the moon (female) had given him a gift...
the hare was to take the gift to the sun (male)....

and the entire book was the hare's journey
to the sun.
i am pretty sure the author was english...

Hi Foxracer!

I am confident that the book you’re referring to is 'Masquerade' - by
Kit Williams.

Below you will find various references where you may verify that this
is the correct book.

Description:
“As the 1970s became the 1980s, a children's book hit the headlines
and sold over a million copies. It told the story of how the Moon,
having fallen in love with the Sun, enlisted the help of Jack Hare to
take her a bejewelled treasure, and how on his journey Jack lost the
treasure. The story was simple and every page contained a wonderful
piece of artwork. Each of the pictures contained many animals or
characters, such as Tara Treetops or Isaac Newton and hidden away in
every picture there would be a hare to find.”

Masquerade by Kit Williams:

“On his way to deliver a splendid necklace to the Sun from the Moon,
Jack Hare is diverted by a series of odd characters and when he
finally reaches his destination he realizes that the necklace is
missing. The reader is invited to answer several riddles and solve the
mystery from clues given in the text.”

There are a number of used copies of this book in excellent condition
available at Alibris.

From Amazon:

“The story is the love tale of the moon and the sun. After falling in
love with the sun, the moon sends him a beautiful, gold, bejeweled
hare, which she entrusts to Jack Hare to deliver. Jack loses the gift,
and the reader is challenged to find it.”

(..)

“The rabbit in the story is sent off with a beautiful necklace. A gift
from the Moon to the Sun. The Moon has fallen in love with the Sun.”

I agree. The book you remember is definitely the exquisite
"Masquerade." Kit Williams' beautifully ornate illustrations
concealing puzzle clues remind me very much of the work of Graeme
Base.

If you enjoy the work of Kit Williams, you may also want to own his
other "puzzle" book, "The Bee on the Comb," which was originally
released as "Book Without a Name," since guessing the book's title was
the main part of the puzzle!
