Do you use bleach?  That could cause it.

The holes are too unoform in where they appear to be bleach holes. It
is most likely to be a 'spike' on the drum but I can't find anything
protuding. Somebody has suggested to me before that it may have
solething to do with the drum not spinning correctly.

Ahh, washing. You've just reminded me that I haven't hung out the load
I put on this morning. I believe that the holes at the bottom of a
t-shirt have a lot to do with a weakness in the fabric caused by the
constant pulling down and/or tucking in and that causes the material
to 'erode' around the hem level. The further abrasion from a washing
machine agitator, detergents and bleach, and the 'rubbing' of the
other clothes being washed with it will cause this weakened fabric to
get holey. Howzat for a theory? :)

of a very similar size and always in close proximity to each other so
there must be a specific reason. Why are the holes always at the hem
and not at the collar?

The answer is gravity. Clothing takes a beating closer to the bottom
on "upperwear" and nearer the top of "lowerwear"...

The washer cannot differentiate between the top and bottom of an
article of clothing. When you drop it in the washer, the washer
doesn't know top from bottom, side from side. It's whatever the fabric
was exposed to that altered the fabric's integrity.

I know this fromn YEARS of experience cleaning upholstery, which is
fabric, same as clothes.

You are so right there. My "lower wear" always gets holes near the top
although as nobody sees them it doesn't bother me in the same way that
it does on the "upper wear".
