I have contacted someone who served on the Tectarius. I have also
determined the body of water and approximate location of 19 degrees 11
north, 39 degrees 28 east.

Would any useful information from the person who served on the
Tecatarius (if I receive a reply from him), along with the geographic
information I have found, be a sufficient answer?

Hello carrot11-ga,

I have received information from the person who served on the
Tectarius, and believe that I now have enough to post an answer.

If you look at a large world atlas at your local library, and find the
page that includes Saudi Arabia, you will see that the intersection of
20 degrees north longitude and 40 degrees east latitude is right off
the coast of Saudi Arabia, down the coast from Jeddah, in the Red Sea.
The coordinates 19 degrees 11 north, 39 degrees 28 east, while not
indicated on the map, are just south and west of that intersection.
In other words, the location is the Red Sea, not far from Saudi
Arabia.

I found the following listing for George Duncan Wilson, who served on
the Tectatius in 1952-53:

"Tectarius / Trevanion"
The British Merchant Navy
http://www.mowbars.fsnet.co.uk/T10.html

I wrote to Mr. Wilson, who responded and gave me permission to post
his reply. He stated:

"T.E.S. Tectarius was an 18000.00 ton American built T2 tanker, built
during the war and bought by the Anglo Saxon Petroleum Company,
shortly afterwards renamed The Shell Tanker Company, after the war. I
joined her in Rotterdam as a first trip Apprentice Deck Officer in
October 1952 and served in her until she drydocked in Cardiff in
November 1953 when I paid off and went home on leave.

At the beginning of January 1953, we left Rotterdam bound for Dakar
and from there we sailed to Curacao where we spent, until August of
that year, running from Curacao, Punta Cardon and Mamonall up to
various ports on the north eastern American seaboard.

In August '53 we were pulled off that run and headed for Mena Al
Ahmadi in the Persian Gulf and I actually finished my time in the
Tectarius running between Rotterdam and various ports in the Gulf."

Mr. Wilson also told me that he would be interested in knowing your
grandfather's name and the capacity he served in. According to Mr.
Wilson, if he too was an apprentice, then it's entirely possible,
considering the time frame, that he was one of the relieving
apprentices in Cardiff in 1953.

You can contact him at the address indicated by the moving the cursor
over or clicking his name on the British Merchant Navy page I've cited
above.
