Question ID: 27065
I need Census-block level data for Michigan and Wisconsin:

total population
population of each tabulated racial group
value per owner-occupied house
population of renters & owners (or number of rented and owned units)

I suppose the racial data may be available on a different schedule
than the owner/renter data, so it may be necessary to provide two sets
of links.

I can handle downloading and parsing out the data, but I'd appreciate
the ability to grab each state in a single download, rather than
fighting with data for each county separately.

I hope the data is available on the web for download, and that it's
not necessary to deal with the Census bureaucracy to purchase it.

Finally, I'm not certain all this data has been released yet. If not,
what is available now, and what is the release schedule?

Hi PPC-GA,

I did a search to try to find anywhere that might have the data other
than the census bureau.

If you are willing to pay for the data there is a site Public Data
Queries Inc. that will probably be just what you are looking for.
http://www.pdq.com/

The states have census reports:

Michigan Census - http://www.state.mi.us/census/

Michigan Information Center
Department of Management & Budget
Demographic Research and Statistics
George W. Romney Building
111 S. Capital, 10 Floor
Lansing, MI 48913

Ms. Carolyn Lauer

FAX (517) 373-2939

Wisconsin Department of Administration

Mr. Robert Naylor

FAX (608) 267-8917
bob.naylor@doa.state.wi.us

You may be able to get information from these sources.

If you use SAS and are looking for coded files, they are available at:
INTER-UNIVERSITY CONSORTIUM FOR POLITICAL AND SOCIAL RESEARCH
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu:8764/query.html?col=abstract&rq=0&nh=500&qt=icpsr&op0=&rf=3&fl0=subject-icpsr%3A&ty0=w&tx0=I.A.1.e.&fl1=availability%3A&ty1=w&op1=-&tx1=restricted

I don't have the programs to open the files from their site. This may
be a problem for you as well.

The Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan
http://www.psc.isr.umich.edu/census2000/
has the population data sets only.

It is available online through the Census site.

http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/BasicFactsServlet?_lang=en

This excerpt is from the FAQ that the census bureau provides to
explain the directions for finding data :

"There are a number of ways to access Census 2000 data from
FactFinder's main page:
Use Basic Facts to make selections and view a table or a map.
In Items of Interest, click the hyperlink 'Census 2000 Release
Schedule'.
Use Search in the upper left corner of the page. Click the keyword or
geography button or the street address hyperlink to obtain data on a
particular subject or geographic area.
Select a data set from the Data Sets section of the main page.

To identify all the census tracts for a geographic area:
Click the Census 2000 Summary File 1 hyperlink on the main page.
On the Dataset Page, select the Detailed Tables hyperlink.
Click on the "geo within geo" radio button.
In the "Show me all" drop-down box, select "Census tract"
In the "Within" drop-down box, select "Place"
In the prompts that follow, select your State and your city or town."

The navigation is a bit tricky, but it seems to be able to add all of
the blocks together into one table - just be resigned to repeating the
steps over again for each county in both states.

Once you get all of the blocks you need data on listed in the table
click on the link to show the table. It doesn't seem to let you opt
for multiple tables when you start the process, but at this point you
can add tables - or data sets. In the top menu is a link that reads
"CHANGE SELECTIONS" that when clicked on gives you a drop down table
with choices of other data to look at for the same geographic set.

I believe that the data sets and tables you'll need are:
P1 TOTAL POPULATION [1]
Universe: Total population

P3 RACE [71]
Universe: Total population

Table: GCT-H6 Occupied Housing Characteristics: 2000
Geography : County -- Census Tract [this provides you with the OWNER
RENTER DATA]

H1 HOUSING UNITS [1]
Universe : Housing units

Hope you have a lot of patience and plenty of help. It's a big job. As
much as you hate dealing with the beuracracy, you might be better off
buying a cd with the data and their sodtware to help with the
analysis.

If you run into trouble navigating the site, just post a clarification
and I'll try to help you figure out where you're clicking the wrong
button. I did get it to work, so it's possible. Just play with it a
while. Goodluck!

Sounds like a major project. Hope this helps.

The state centers do not have the data broken into blocks on their
sites. They may be able to provide you with it if you contact them. I
just reread the answer and it seemed misleading. Of course, if you
could go to the state centers, why search elsewhere. The fact that you
need the block information is what makes it so difficult. I would try
them by email and see if they could send a file with the relevant
data. It doesn't hurt to ask!

Again, good luck!!

Didn't exactly solve my problem, but demonstrated that there isn't any
easy solution. Pointed me to a private vendor who has since offered
to do the work for roughly $1000, which appears to be reasonable.
Google-answers was clearly worth the effort and the $20.50 it cost.
I'd have awarded FIVE stars (instead of four) for the full answer.
Too much to ask for, I suppose, but there's no harm in it.

I'll definitely be back with more questions.
