I used to use Button Boogie (from PC Magazine) to slide my taskbar
buttons into any order I wanted. But Boogie don't boogie in Windowx
XP. The program also let me asign a size and position on-screen for
each window and would automatically return programs to their spot when
I loaded them.
I need these features in XP... any programs out there? |

Holstein, thanks for your question and for choosing Google! Answers.
If you check the taskbar properties (right click on the taskbar on
some dead space, like directly around the Start button, and go to
Properties) there should be an option to turn off the feature that
auto-hides inactive "System Tray icons" as they are known. It may or
may not make your software work.
If not, perhaps this will help...

Using this tool, you can hide and show system tray icons. I *think*
(but I'm not sure and can't test it readily now) that if you hide an
icon and then redisplay it, it's position will be moved to the end of
the System Tray.
Another possible solution, TraySaver from mlin.net:
http://www.mlin.net/TraySaver.shtml
Again, not exactly what you were looking for and no guarantees it will
work under XP either; WatchCat has better odds in my opinion.
If not, there is the for-pay program, from PS Soft Lab:
http://www.pssoftlab.com/faq.phtml
Zmover provides the other functionality you described:

If you don't want to use a seperate program, try this. Open only one
window. Size it the way you want. Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys
and close the window. It should maintain the same size and position
when you open it again. If you want it maxmized, maximize it first and
then close it as above.

Thanks again for your question. I am posting this as a clarification
request until I get confirmation that one of the solutions for your
first problem solved your needs.

The ZMover program works great for putting a program where I want on
the screen each time it loads. Thanks for the tip.
The other programs for tray icons aren't what I need. I need a program
that allows me to slide my taskbar BUTTONS around -- the buttons that
appear when you open a new program. I have so many programs open at
once (Eudora, IE, FTP, etc.) that I work best when I keep them in the
same order.

Oh, I see what you mean now.
It's not marked for Windows XP (and I don't have a copy so I can't
test it) but it won't hurt to try this out:
http://download.com.com/3000-2341-5949539.html
There is also this (non-free) program which does not list its
compatability requirements at all:
http://www.askarya.com/tm/tm.htm
However, this site lists it as XP-compatible, though they may not be
the most reliable source.
http://www.softpile.com/Desktop/Desktop_Utilities/Review_13255_index.html
Please let me know if either of these solutions work for you, though
I'm not entirely confident they will.
