Hello, redrover1-ga !
I listen to Larry Elder quite often and think he is an interesting
person. I initially thought that this would be an easy question to
answer given all of his detractors, especially among the conventional
black leadership. However, finding documented criticism from political
personalities is next to impossible. This may be due to the desire to
refrain from being identified in any way with the secretive group, the
Talking Drum, who tried hard to get Elder off the air several years
ago.
I have provided you with everything I have found. I hope it is helpful!

From "YOU, TOO, CAN WRITE A CONSERVATIVE OPINION COLUMN" by Robert
Gelfand. Vol. 9, No. 2170 - The American Reporter - August 29, 2003
http://www.american-reporter.com/2170/96.html
"Anyone can write a conservative newspaper column. To borrow from the
Wizard of Oz, lots of people with no more talent or brains than you or
me do it. Just think of Jack Kemp, Mona Charen, Larry Elder, and
Thomas Sowell, whose syndicated columns appear in our nation's daily
newspapers. The tricks they use are remarkably similar."

"Blasting 'Victicrats."
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/2020/2020/2020_010831_elder.html
Syndicated columnist George Curry is one of many blacks who say
Elder's views are ridiculous. "It's not even reality to say that race
is no longer a factor in this country," says Curry."
"Curry says Elder is a grandstander who uses provocative language to
get attention. "He's a hustler," says Curry. "He's hustling his
right-wing ideology, because he knows white folks like to hear that."
"A few years ago, a group of African-Americans tried to get Elder
taken off the air. They passed out flyers, picketed outside KABC where
he worked and called him and the station racist."
"The protesters had some success. Fearful of negative publicity for
supporting an accused bigot, several advertisers pulled out of the
show, and Elder's airtime was cut from four to two hours."

From "WACKOS, WEIRDOS, AND WING-DINGS, by Justin Raimondo. Behind the
Headlines, (June 2003) http://www.antiwar.com/justin/j060203.html
Excerpt:
"Hypocrisy is an essential ingredient in the make up of any
politician, no matter which party he belongs to, and certainly Elder
is especially favored in this regard. When he was boycotted and
picketed by African-Americans who didn't take kindly to his views on
race matters, and his radio time was cut back by his sponsors, Elders
and his supporters were whining and screaming "censorship" with a
series of paid pro-Elder ads (David Horowitz's outfit picked up the
tab to the tune of $350,000). Yet when antiwar actors and other public
figures were attacked and denied employment for their views on foreign
policy, suddenly Elder rediscovered the "true" meaning of censorship
and concluded that antiwar "celebrities are ignorant of the First
Amendment."

============
From "Disrespecting Elder," by Ayana Green. Reason Online. (1996)
http://reason.com/9607/ltr.ELDER.shtml
"There is good reason why Larry Elder is dubbed "the most racist,
anti-Black talk show host in Southern California," as you quote
someone saying in the introduction to your interview with Mr. Elder
("Elder Statesman," April). While crime, teen pregnancy, drug abuse,
and other ills are on the increase outside the black community, Larry
Elder presents these ills as black problems rather than American
problems........Would the Larry Elder Show be as successful if race
were not central to its format? Elder's detractors believe he has
advanced ratings and career by exploiting blacks."

From "All The Wrong Dogs," by John T. Jones. Patriot News. (Sep 6, 2003)

"Oh, wait, Larry Elder is the guy who thinks he can be a Republican
and a Libertarian at the same time. That's quite akin to dipping snuff
and drinking a milkshake simultaneously. I only know one person in my
life who could pull that off, and he's dead. I'm from Georgia, so I am
very familiar with the intimate details of "chaw". Sorry, Larry,
that dog don't hunt."
ERIC WATTREE
=============
From "LARRY ELDER - THE SCOURGE FROM SOUTH-CENTRAL," by Eric L. Wattree
http://wattree.com/elder2.html
Excerpt:
"Thus, the anger that we see directed toward Larry Elder from the
black community is the kind of anger reserved for treacherous,
self-serving demagogues--those not as interested in public
enlightenment as they are dragging the public perception of their own
people through the mud for the sole purpose of personal enrichment."
Beyond that, Elder is an embarrassment to our community. He might as
well go on the air and say, "Unfortunately, I am black, but that
doesn?t mean that I like them as much as I do you white folks. I swear
to that on a stack of Bibles, and I?m gonna prove it to you every day.
In fact, I?ll even go farther than that - I won?t even tolerate white
folks who defend blacks."
THE TALKING DRUM (AS WRITTEN UP IN LA JOURNAL)

Criticism from the Black Group - "The Talking Drum":
"The guy's a jerk!" declared a brotha' after he'd confirmed my
partnership on Larry's show. I was shopping in the Leimert Park
district located in the Crenshaw area of very Black Los Angeles. No
gangs, no guns, just Black people trying to capitalize in a mixed-bag,
pseudo-intellectual, middle-income area of artisans, musicians,
Muslims and business people. To many of them, Elder was either an
enigma or an "Uncle Tom" regurgitating "the man's" rhetoric."
"It was the latter assumption that resulted in a harsh and eerily
effective backlash from an anonymous Black group that referred to
itself as The Talking Drum. They nearly drummed Elder off the air. His
four-hour broadcast was slashed in half. Major sponsors pulled their
support, some never to renew, afraid of sending the wrong White
message to their Black consumers."

From a thread titled "RE: Is racial profiling compatible with American
democracy? (2002)
https://mail.lsit.ucsb.edu/pipermail/gordon-newspost/2002-June/002761.html
I am confused about Larry Elder?s column. I thought that a nationally
syndicated columnist would have a more sophisticated understanding of
racial issues in America. I guess I was wrong

If I can manage to find anything further, I will add it in a
clarification. Again, I need to say how surprised I am that there are
no quotes from the likes of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, etc.
Certainly, Larry Elder doesn't mince any words in his opinion of them!
