I am looking for a reasonably priced data source of daily stock
prices. It does not have to be realtime, it can even be up to a week
delayed. The data needs to be able to be used for commercial purposes
and the more US stocks it covers the better. It also has to be
something that can be automatically parsed, so it needs to be an
electronic feed.

For example, just being able to get the daily stock tables that
newspapers print in electronic form would work.

I hope this helps! I've tested some of the services above (in
particular, I use Yahoo! Finance and Quotes Plus every day) and they
seem to work just fine; I'm sure you will like any one of them.
However, if this is not what you were looking for, please remember
that this question is not considered close until you're happy with it.

All of these sites seem to be oriented toward an individual and not
allow commercial use. I need to be able to use the data commercially.
Do any of these sources allow commercial usage?

I know of some places that offer historical stock prices without any
restrictions on usage. I need the data within a week in an automatable
fashion.

I would imagine the cost would be significantly higher for commercial
use, and that is fine, as long as it is not insanely higher. I want to
make a publicly accessible database using this data, so commercial use
being allowed is critical.

Hi clb108,
I'm very sorry I misunderstood the question. I've just emailed several
stock data providers asking them how much they charge for data that
will be redistributed. I expect to receive a reply in short. If I
don't get a satisfactory answer today, I'll ask the editors to pull my
answer.

Best regards,

Hi again clb!
In order to supply you with a quote for the information you're looking
for, I would need to know the following:

1) Whether data would be redistributed in raw (actual high, low,
close) or derivative (charts, technical analysis, etc.) format?
2) Number of customers to whom data would be supplied?
3) Retail and/or institutional customers? If both, please indicate
number for each category.
4) Method of data delivery to customers?

Please answer this as soon as possible so I can get you the price you
would have to pay.

Thanks a lot,
elmarto

Hi clb108,
One more question: do you need historical data? Or you would only need
data from the date you subscribe to a service on? If your case is the
latter, I've found a site that charges $350/month for daily data that
can be used for commercial purposes; it even includes options data
(I've already sent an email asking what would the fee be without
options data). They also provide historical data, but I'm not sure
wether it is available for commercial use. I've asked this in the
email and I'll let you know as soon as they get back.

Best regards,
elmarto

Hi again clb!
Yet another reply, and a question: in what format do you intend to
present the data? StockWiz (see the link in my answer) allows you to
redistribute the data for the same fee, provided that you will not
present it in the same format as they do. That is, they allow to
redistribute the data as long as it is presented, for example, as a
chart or report. Would this do? In any case, I'm still waiting for
your reply to my previous answer clarification, so I can get you some
more quotes.

Best regards,
elmarto

Answers below:

1) Whether data would be redistributed in raw (actual high, low,
close) or derivative (charts, technical analysis, etc.) format?

The exact way the data would be redistributed has not been determined
yet, but most likely it will only be in derivative form.

2) Number of customers to whom data would be supplied?

Hopefully a really large number :), but no idea of exact number, so I
prefer an unlimited use license.

3) Retail and/or institutional customers? If both, please indicate
number for each category.

Retail is what is expected, but I don't want to exclude institutional
customers.

4) Method of data delivery to customers?
Most like via a web based interface

I only need data moving forward, as I already have historical data. I
am not comfortable with restrictions on what can be done with the
data. A source at $350/mo (or less) without any restrictions would be
acceptable.

Hello Clint!
I've already forwarded your answers to the data provider and I will
tell you the quote as soon as I get a reply. I'm also still waiting a
reply from the site that allegedly charges $350/mo. I'll keep you
informed.

Hello Clint!
Well, I've got a reply from the site that charges $350/mo. They have
stated that since you're not going to use the options data, the charge
would be $150/month for commercial use. They have equity data
available for optionable stocks only, though; but that's more than
2,200 US stocks. The link to the site is the following:

StrickNet
http://www.stricknet.com/main/data.htm

I'm also still waiting for another reply, from the provider Yahoo!
uses to get the equity data available in their site. I will let you
know as soon as I get a response. For now, StrickNet appears to be the
best alternative; and if you're only going to use the data in
derivative form, StockWiz, at $20/month, woould be a cheap option.

Best wishes!
elmarto

I guess 2200 stocks is better than nothing, but I was hoping for the
entire universe of US stocks, which I think is a lot closer to 15,000.

Hi Clint!
I'll get back to you when I get a reply from the other source, which
should provide equity data for a lot more stocks. However, I assume
the price of this service will be substantially higher than $150 or
$350. I'll let you know as soon as I get the answer.

elmarto

Hi again Clint!
Finally, I got a quote from the site that provides data to Yahoo!
Finance. As I expected, it's quite higher than the StrickNet, but it
covers 12,000 US stocks. These are the prices I got from their sales
representative:

Daily updates for US stocks provided to retail clients in derivative
form would be for $395/month for a one-year term.

Daily updates for US stocks provided to retail clients in raw form would be for:

1) Base Fee: $500/month
2) Royalty Charge: Cost/end user/month: $4 (001 - 100 customers)
                                           $2 (101 - 500 customers)
                                           $1 (over 501 customers)

The product is called "TurboFeed". Here's the link to the home page of
this provider:

For more details, you can write to the person who emailed me this
information. His name and email can be found at the end of the
following pdf document:

I hope this helps!
