Hello crystal4290-ga,
I have found lots of statistics for the incidence of sleep apnea in
the US and a few resources for worldwide trends. Ive also located
some very expensive market research reports that would answer
everything you want to know about the apnea treatment device market.
Reviewing the tables of contents for these reports will give you a
starting point for exploring further what devices are already on the
market. The company youre thinking of investing in may already have
bought these reports and might be able to make them available to you.
Or, they may choose to buy them for their own use.
Ive also included some general information sites to help you further
explore the wealth of resources available for educating both patients
and medical practitioners about this condition.
I hope that the reports Ive found meet your needs. Please ask for
clarification before rating my answer and I will be happy to pursue
whatever information you needs.
Best wishes for your research.

U.S. Sleep Apnea Diagnostics and Therapeutics Markets

Untapped Patient Population Key to Industry Growth
Sleep apnea is as common a disease as adult diabetes. However, limited
public knowledge of this disorder and treatment options have left the
vast majority of sufferers undiagnosed. Considering the potential
patient population, the possibility for growth within this underserved
market is tremendous. As there is no cure for obstructive sleep apnea
(OSA), the dependence on therapeutic equipment will result in strong
product demand by a more cognizant populace.
This Frost & Sullivan study analyzes the state of the U.S. sleep apnea
markets, including in-depth evaluations of the diagnostic and
therapeutic sectors. By monitoring consumer trends and providing
expert forecasts, this research offers a comprehensive guide to this
flourishing field.

device market segments included in this report.

Growth Forecast for Sleep Apnea Market
A report issued by market researchers Frost & Sullivan on the US sleep
apnea diagnostic and therapeutic market reveals that this industry
generated revenues of $386 million in 2000, and researchers further
project that it will pass the $1 billion mark by 2007. Awareness of
sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) remains both a
market driver and restraint, says Frost & Sullivan analyst Monali
Patel. Although knowledge has increased in both the general and
physician communities, it is not reaching its potential. The general
population remains largely unaware that their constant fatigue may
actually be caused by OSA. More information on Frost & Sullivans

Sleep Apnea Markets
Studies suggest that up to 30 million Americans suffer from
obstructive sleep apnea. Physicians have become more aware of the
seriousness of this condition, and proactive diagnosis and treatment
have become more common in recent years. However, even with this
increased attention from the medicine community, 95% of individuals
suffering from this condition remain undiagnosed. The presence of an
estimated 3,000 sleep labs in the U./S. combined with advancements in
home screening technologies, are contributing to market growth in
apnea monitors and devices. This report reviews the market conditions
and key players in this arena.

APNEA STATISTICS
================
http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/s/sleep_apnea/prevalence.htm
Prevalence and Incidence of Sleep apnea
About prevalence and incidence statistics: The term 'prevalence' of
Sleep apnea usually refers to the estimated population of people who
are managing Sleep apnea at any given time. The term 'incidence' of
Sleep apnea refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new
cases of Sleep apnea diagnosed each year.
Prevalance of Sleep apnea: estimated 18 million Americans (NHLBI)
Prevalance Rate: approx 1 in 15 or 6.62% or 18 million people in USA
[about data]
Undiagnosed prevalence of Sleep apnea: estimated 2-4% of Americans
undiagnosed
Undiagnosed prevalence rate: approx 1 in 50 or 2.00% or 5.4 million
people in USA [about data]
Prevalance of Sleep apnea: It has been estimated that as many as 18
million Americans have sleep apnea.1

About Prevalence and Incidence Statistics
Statistical information such as prevalence, incidence, deaths, and
other data is provided from numerous sources and is subject to
numerous provisos. Nevertheless, it is hoped to be useful, if not
completely accurate.
Prevalence versus incidence: Prevalence and incidence are different
measures of a disease's occurrence. The "prevalence" of a condition
means the number of people who currently have the condition, whereas
"incidence" refers to the annual number of people who have a case of
the condition. These two measures are very different. A chronic
incurable disease like diabetes can have a low incidence but high
prevalence, because the prevalence is the cumulative sum of past year
incidence rates. A short-duration curable condition such as the common
cold can have a high incidence but low prevalence, because many people
get a cold each year, but few people actually have a cold at any given
time.

Sleep Apnea
About 6 to 7 percent of the U. S. population (18 million Americans)
have Sleep Apnea. Men are more susceptible than women, evidently due
to hormonal influences (Sleep Apnea is rarely seen in premenopausal
females). There are also Sleep Apnea clusters within families.
Obesity, even if moderate, is a predisposing factor. It is worsened by
the use of alcohol and sleeping pills.
Elderly African Americans, according to a 1995 study published in
ALAs American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, are
more than twice as likely as elderly whites to suffer from
sleep-disordered breathing.
The researchers, at the University of California, San Diego, studied
54 African Americans and 346 Whites aged 65 and older. They found that
17 percent of the African American subjects had Sleep Apnea, compared
with 8 percent of the whites. Statistics are not available for other
groups.

Sleep Apnea is Under-Diagnosed
Statistics on Under-Diagnosis
It is difficult to find reliable data on the rate of sleep apnea
diagnosis in the United States. Data from a Wisconsin study in the
1990s is used in the chart below. 1 2
The chart shows the number of adults in the United States with sleep
apnea. 3 It also shows the number with symptoms of sleep apnea and
the number who have been diagnosed as having sleep apnea. There are
about 200 million adults in the United States.
