Hi ray45247,
The most common means of propagating the Daylily is by dividing
clumps. However, depending on your location, it is probably too late
this year to safely divide the clumps. This is usually done in the
late summer or early fall, giving them plenty of time to settle into
their new location before winter hits. However, you can still collect
the seeds (they are mature when the capsule is beginning to split),
but it may take two or three years for them to bloom starting from
scratch. If you have any plantlets (proliferations) attached to the
old flower stalks (scapes), try taking them off and rooting them to
produce some clones of the mother plant. Actually, Daylilies are "self
seeders", and will, over time, spread all by themselves if you let
them go to seed.
Step-by-step instructions for dividing Daylilies:
"Late summer is the best time to divide your daylilies. Their roots
will have time to grow before winter comes if this task is completed
in early September."

Devonian Botanic Garden:
"In fact the easiest method of propagating daylilies is by division
when the plants are dormant. To make the plant easier to handle, cut
the foliage down to about 20 cm and trim and wash the roots before
dividing the plant, and aim for plants with at least three to five
shoots. Daylilies are also very easily raised from seed and will
flower one to three years after sowing. No garden should be without a
daylily or two."

When and how do I divide daylilies?
"I've found that late summer is the best time to divide and transplant
day lilies. This gives them an opportunity to settle in before the
colder, shorter days arrive.
To divide them carefully lift the clumps with a sharp shovel and
gently remove the earth from the roots so you can see the individual
clumps. Then using a sharp knife separate each plant and remove any
dead or diseased foliage. Cut the remaining foliage down to about half
it's original height and they are ready for replanting. Space them
about twelve inches apart in full sun and keep them well watered until
they are rooted. Next spring you should have wonderful blooms"

Questions about Propagating Daylilies:
"I put the seeds in a paper envelope and store the seeds in a cool dry
place until late winter. Next I put the seeds in between wet paper
towels in an aluminum pie plate place inside a plastic bag and
refrigerate for 3-4 weeks. Then I plant the seeds in flats or pots and
grow them in my greenhouse to plant out later."
"My grandfather lived in Maryland. He planted his seeds in rows
directly in the ground in the fall. However he fumigated the soil
first to kill all weeds. If you plant in the ground weeds may grow
faster than the daylilies. Lastly remember that it may take 2-3 years
for the daylilies to bloom. But there is nothing more exciting than
seeing your seedling bloom for the first time!"
