Hello diebad,

The "most famous" TV PSAs is a subjective thing to determine. But
surely any list of most famous would include:

"This is your brain on drugs
A mind is a terrible thing to waste
Only you can prevent forest fires
Take a bite out of crime
Friends don't let friends drive drunk"

"Intersector Transfer of Marketing Knowledge", draft by Alan R.
Andreasen [at beginning of "3. Alliance Building", about 3/5 down the
page]
Social Marketing Institute
http://www.social-marketing.org/papers/intersectortransfer.html

As you may recall, these PSAs were sponsored by the Ad Council. On
its web site, the Ad Council lists its some of its most famous
campaigns. In addition to most of the PSAs previously mentioned
(except for "This is your brain on drugs"), the list includes other
famous campaigns, including "The toughest job you'll ever love" ads
for the Peace Corps; the anti-pollution ad featuring the "crying
Indian"; and most recently, the "I am an American" ads after the
September 11 attacks.

Being in law enforcement I can tell you what the goofiest one of all
time was.

The DARE Program (a program designed to teach kids not to use drugs)
began distributing pencils to schools to get the message out. On the
pencil was printed "IT ISN'T COOL TO USE DRUGS".

After a few sharpenings by the student recipient it was quickly
reduced to "COOL TO USE DRUGS" and then finally just "USE DRUGS".

Bad plan.

Give a hoot: don't pollute.

Cross on the green, not in between (may have been local in NY).
