Jean Dartes, (son of Pierre Dartes and Marie Garsault from FRANCE) was
born 8 April 1750 in Camblanes, France. He lived in Castres, France,
just south of Bordeaux until migrating to the Spanish Colony of
Louisiana in 1765 at the age of 15. He was the first and only Dartes
to reach these shores. He worked first as an apprentice blacksmith
under the tutorship of a Mr. Jacque Nagle at Natchitoches, Louisiana.
He next lived in St. Martinville, La. in a cattle ranching household,
consisting of five bachelors named Grevemberg.
The May 1777 Louisiana Attakapas District census lists Jean Dartes,
26, married to Pelagie Provost, age 20. (daughter of Nicholas Prevost
(sometimes spelled Provost) and Marie Francoise Quebedeaux. Jean
Dartes and Pelagie Provost were parents of 10 children named:
Julienne, Marie, Celeste, Sebastienne, Jean Pierre, Pelagie,
Josephine, Pierre, Eugenie, Alexandre and Eugenie Frederick.
Jean Dartes obtained land grants in the Louisiana Attakapas District.
The first application dated August 25, 1775 and confirmed April 1,
1777 was Tract 107, (12 arpents x 42 arpents in depth) located in the
Attakapas District Section 62 in Township 8, South, Range 5 East.
Another land grant was a tract 10 arpents front x 40 arpents in depth

adjoining and part of the present town of Franklin, Louisiana.
Jean Dartes lived and worked his land in the Franklin, Louisiana area
until he died in 1810. His succession is #61 in the St. Martinville,
Louisiana courthouse located about 40 miles northwest.
I would like information as to what city and cemetery he is buried. |
