Hi Wonko,

You did so well before that I thought I’d try you again.

EQUIPMENT - I’m running an IBM ThinkPad T-23 with plenty of RAM. I’m
running Windows 2000 Profesional. I’m also running an IBM
Multi-Burner which does in fact work and which burns CD-R’s, CD-RW’s,
DVD-R’s, and DVD-RW’s through the IBM Record Now function. Like I
said, it’s working, at least mechanically

PROGRAMS - On the T-23, I have at least 3 programs which are supposed
to make video into DVD’s. Only problem is, they won’t do it on either
the hard disc or the IBM Multi-Burner. I’m particularly disturbed
because they won’t do it on the hard disc. Once we get the hard disc
problem figured out, I’m pretty sure the Multi-Burner will follow.

I’m starting all of these processes with an MPEG 2 file and a WAV
file. According to the Help files, this is supposed to work.

PROGRAM 1 - Avid Xpress 3.0 – “Create Volume on Disc” appears to work
OK. But it’s hard to tell. The only true test is to do the next step
which is to use a DVD creation program to get the package on DVD disc.
Unfortunately, the programs below, which I’d ordinarily use, hang up
as I’ve described below.

In Avid, when I use “Create DVD on Disc”, I get a partial writing, but
the process hangs up indefinitely on “Recording to Disc”.

Note on Avid: This program makes its own MPEG 2 and WAV files which
it then uses to make a DVD either on Disc or on DVD.

PROGRAM 2 - DVDit! V2.5 LE – Will not burn a DVD to either my hard
disc or to the DVD disc. I get an error message that says that the
WAV file has an unsupported number of channels. There’s only one WAV
file, so I’m not sure how they get this. There is only one audio
track.

PROGRAM 3 - Intervideo Win DVD Creator Plus v1.0 – This is the program
that came with the IBM Multiburner. It should work. This will allow
me to make VCDs and SVCDs on either the hard disc or a CD. The
process works very well. However, when I try to make a DVD on either
my hard disc or a DVD disc, the process hangs up on “Making Movie.”
For a 15 second clip, I can leave the machine running all night long
and it won’t do anything. Additional problems with this program are
(1) once I make a VCD or SVCD, the discs won’t auto-start in a
computer or player. (2) An SVCD creation on either the hard disc or
on a CD will have pulsing titles. (3) No matter how I plug cameras
into the computer, WinDVD’s device list won’t show them.

PROGRAM SUPPORT - I’ve written to Win DVD. They asked questions about
the hardware (all of which is OK) and then told me to talk to IBM.

IBM says they have documentation to fix similar problems on their
ThinkPad T-30. However, they say I shouldn’t download these patches
on the T-23. I’ll risk more problems.

I’ve written to DVDit! Support. Unfortunately, they’re not interested
in answering, though their websites say they’ll answer in 24 hours.

ATTEMPTS – I’ve re-installed all software with no good results. And
I've systematically tried all possibilities in running the above
programs with no result.

SUSPICION #1 - One suspicion I have is that none of these programs
work with Microsoft Service Pack 3, which is what I’m using. Could
this be the case? If so, what are the patches? Once Service Pack 3
is installed, there’s no way to remove it and back down to Service
Pack 2.

SUSPICION #2 – I doubt that the IBM Multiburner physically has
anything to do with the problem. I’m guessing this because I can’t
burn DVD’s to my hard drive. And, all problems with SVCD’s are
happening in both the hard drive and the Mutliburner.

PROBLEM RE-STATED - Any ideas on what’s going on with the above? As I
said, the hardware is working OK. The fact that I can’t make DVD’s on
either the hard disc or a DVD disc indicates a hardware/software
conflict that I’m getting tired of. I figure that, once I get the
thing fixed well enough to burn to hard disc, then it’ll work on the
Multiburner.

Additionally, what is the phone number for DVDit!? There’s not one
listed in the website.

What is the number for Intervideo Win DVD?

Thanks,

Zaynab-ga

Hi Wonko,

I've just re-confirmed that I do indeed get an error message which
says, "Unsupported number of channels" when I use the "Build a DVD"
function on DVDit!. This happens whether or not I use simply one
channel of audio or mix-down several channels to one and then import
to DVDit!.

Maybe the other commentor was right. This is an MPEG problem. Stands
to reason, since all DVD burning programs I'm using are failing when I
try to burn DVD's. The source MPEG and WAV files are coming from AVID
Xpress 3.0 DV. These source files play OK in Windows Media Player.
But I just can't make a DVD from them.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Zaynab-ga

I haven't had any experience with any of the above packages, but some
of this may prove helpful:

* WAV file has too many channels: This may mean that there are more
than 2 channels in the WAV (4, 5, or maybe even 6) which would require
an AC3 (or similar) Codec. Check that this isn't the case, and if it
is downmix to 2 channels using suitable software.

* Check the MPEG-2 files. You don't mention what software you're
using to create them, but as this is the common link in the chain, it
may be this part that's causing the problem. For MPEG encoding I
recommend MainConcept MPEG Encoder -- it's fast, easy to use, supports
batch encoding, and hasn't let me down yet.

As a final recourse, try yet another DVD authoring package. TMPEG DVD
Author is pretty good and reasonably fast, or for a free alternative
try IFO Edit -- it's not quite as uer friendly, but it's reliable.

Hi There and thanks for the comments.

The audio starts out as 8 channels, but it's all mixed down to one
before being turned into a WAV file. Seems like this should work OK.
Any ideas?

The MPEG 2 comes Avid Xpress 3.0. I have no idea how to check what
actually makes the MPEG 2 file, but I'm willing to give it a shot, if
you'll let me know what to do. I'm hesitant to install another MPEG
encoder for fear of screwing up the Avid. It's delicate beyond
belief.

Thanks
