Hello,
I'm a little bit crazy and naive and have a lot of time on my hands at
the moment.
My post is request for research and also a statement inviting
critical/helpful/thoughtful comments. In reading answers.google.com i
realise that the question is often more interesting than the answer
and that asking a question is should always be part of an intelligent
process.
I am looking to buy a laptop. My shipping address is in Co. Limerick
Republic of Ireland
Please search for laptops using the info supplied below.
Please find suppliers that will ship to Republic of Ireland. My
maximum for the laptop is 1500, i may spend more on peripherals.
My ideal laptop will be ultraportable and of moderate processing
power.
All i want is (at the least):
~2.0kg
1 USB 2.0 port
~30 Gb HDD
VGA out
Integrated modem.
Will be used for watching DVDs, reading PDFs, msoffice 2003, email web
browsing. Dualbooting windows xp and redhat(with a GUI). 3d gaming
performance is NOT wanted. Given this, I believe that being
ultraportable should not raise the price of a laptop.
The reason i choose have to onboard modem, is because external modems
are bulky and i will frequently be using the modem.
My philosphy is:
Have a small, light laptop that has very little or no integrated
features but is extensible via USB. They only integrated feature
needed is a modem. I will not be attempting to watch DVDs or burn CDs
on a train or airplaine. I will not be using my laptop outside my own
home(or similar environment)
I will be reading PDF documents in bed before going to sleep. Sitting
at the couch half-wathcing the TV while surfing the net.
If i want to burn CDs or wathc DVDs i will put the laptop on a
suitable surface and plugin my peripherals.
If I want Ethernet i will plug in a USB ethernet device, if I want TV
- usb winTV box, if i want keyb/mouse - Usb, if i want 802.11b - usb
..repeat for any device you can think of. If i'm doing anything extra
or complicated, i will be at a desk with a power outlet, using a USB
hub to connect my periphs.
So why do i want an ultraportable when i don't travel. I like to move
around the house and be flexible where i sit although it will never be
too far from a power outlet. I want to be able to put my laptop and
periphs in a bag and take them with me. I will be able to choose what,
if any , of my periphs i take with me. I want to be able to sell and
buy my periphs or the laptop itself, independantly of any other
component.
I will be able to use my periphs on my laptop, my deskop, any other
computer i come across or buy in the future.
Think of my laptop setup on any given day as a Unix command that uses
pipes and redirects using several programs. It is made up of many
components that do one thing very well and can be reused in different
ways. It is THAT kind of portability that i also seek. All of the
component commands do one thing well and require thought and
understanding. I don't want to be using bulky, heavy clumsy laptop
that trys to be all things to all people all at once !
I suspect that proven marketing practices have shown that this concept
is unecessary is not as easy to sell, that is supposing that this
concept has been thought of at all.
Your reply should include the following details:
make, model, specs, price including VAT and shipping in Euros, price of
extra battery, weblink to supplier.
Please search the internet for negative reviews of the laptop itself
or the supplier or after sale support.
I will consider both Mac or Intel based laptops. Second hand,
refurbished from reputable supplier considered.
