Hello zeus400,
The manual for your camera, in case you did not get one with your
floor model, can be found here:
http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/dvimag/cybershot/Cybershot_1.html
If you don't have a hardcopy, you may want to bookmark this page, as
opposed to printing it out. It consists of 104 pages(!)
I read the entire manual, and it does not state anything about a
default flash setting to "None". In fact, there are few instructions
or directions for the flash.
There are 3 flash settings:
Auto (Has no screen indicator)The camera determines the necessity of a
flash
Forced Flash (Indicated by a jagged downwardly pointing arrow) The
flash will operate whether needed or not
No Flash (Indicated by a jagged downward pointing arrow in a circle
with a diagonal line through it) Self explanatory, no flash will
occur, regardless of need.
I am presuming that your camera is set to NONE, and when you turn on
the flash, you are not using the menu to "set" the change (Using "set
up mode"), causing it to revert back to NONE when the camera is turned
off and on again. Be sure you do not have the camera in "Twilight"
mode, as you can not use the flash in this mode. (See Page 30).
Check the bottom of Page 81 and see if this is how you are changing
the flash mode.
Page 26 of this downloadable manual shows how to set the flash
settings.
Page 81 shows a bit about flash troubleshooting
This Amazon.com review states yours is a multi-mode flash model, but
there is no mention of any flash problems.

I reviewd several sites for flash problems in your model, and was
unable to find any other owners with the same problem.
If after checking the information I have given you, you still are
unsuccessful keeping the flash on by default, please ask for an answer
clarification, and I will be happy to further assist you.

The camera turns on in "no flash" mode.
I change it to "auto" mode.
I turn it off.
I turn it on and it is back to "no flash".
I want it to stay in auto (or whatever mode I set it to) as my old camera did.
This is the issue.

Thank you zeuss400, for your clarification. I understand your
frustration, and I feel it must be something simple, short of having a
mechanical/electronic defect. Are the batteries fresh or freshly
charged?
Have you checked whether the camera is set to *twilight mode*?
From reading the manual, it appears that the flash will not work in
this mode.
PLease let me know if removing *Twilight mode* did the trick.

It is not in twilight mode.
The batteries are fine.
All other changed settings are preserved.
Once again, my theory is that this is somehow related to it being a
display model, and that this is a non public configuration to minimize
disruption in stores.

Hi again, Thank you for ruling out the Twilight mode issue. When the
local stores open, I will call and see if there is a setting the
stores use to keep the flash mode to Off. I will post my asnwer when I
have one. Thanks for your patience!

Hello again, zeus400,
Thank you for being patient! I just spoke to Dan, at my local Best
Buy. He at first thought that the camera *should* default to the OFF
setting. I asked him to try setting one of the Sony DSC-P9 models in
the store. When he did, the camera retained whatever setting he had
chosen.(As you have stated it should!)
This salesman also told me that if you bought the camera with the
"Performance Plan" that you can return it for repair or replacment,
whichever they determine is best, at your store. If you don't have the
"Plan" you can explain the problem at the store where you made the
purchase, and perhaps they will trade it for another floor model. He
knew of no other method for the camera to be set to maintain the flash
"Always on", and that the store does nothing to force the "No Flash"
to remain as the default setting.
Sounds now like you have a slightly defective camera! I wish some of
my suggestions would have spared you a trip back to the store, and I
certainly hope Best Buy remedies the situation for you!
