I am looking for information technology benchmarks that would help
determine the number of FTEs by the complexity and size of a
manufacturing site. We have been charged with reorganizing ICT
regionally for the USA by plant. We need an industry Metric or
Benchmark to work from. Something normally used by outsourcing firms
in a needs assessment when giving an estimate on services for any
given site. I have found articles at Gartner group for 1600-2500$. But
without knowing if these articles contain actual benchmarks, case
studies or examples that would give me - 1 FTE per 250 Pcs, 1 Network
Admin per 20 servers - 1 network manager for multiple domains - etc
etc. I could not afford to pay those prices.

We are looking to keep insourced what is appropriate to run the
business with core competencies in house and outsource only that which
has been shown by the industry to produce ROI. In fact a case for
insourcing would also be good as well as the metrics and benchmarks
for determining FTEs for core competencies.
Summary:
1. Benchmark for industry - what core competencies are insourced
today?
2. Industry Best Practice for IT sourcing strategies. Case studies,
examples, experiences.
3. How many FTEs per core competency? What are the KPIs? An example
needs asssesment or an Outsourcing provider's statistics or
benchmarks.

I think the answer to this question would depend a good deal on the
nature of the manufacturing sites...pharmaceutical plants have very
different IT needs than, say, a furniture company.

Can you provide any more detail about the nature of the plants
involved -- what they manufacture, and the size of the plants, for
instance. Any additional information would help focus our research.

Thanks.

Hi,

given the very diverse nature of your business, global reach and huge
size, you might want to consider involving an outsourcing consulting
firm. That would get you much more specific results to your very
detailed questions, than a pricey Gartner article.
