It was not an easy quest, but I finally found out about the connection
between an "enigmatic statue" and the coordinates 38° 57' 6.5" North /
77° 8' 44" West (I already added the "one degree north"):
In a courtyard of the CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia, a
sculpture by artist James Sanborn had been installed in 1990. This
sculpture displays thousands of characters contain encrypted messages,
of which three have been solved so far, while the fourth message
remains yet uncracked.
Th second part of the deciphered code contains the geographic
coordinates you gave, in the following context:
"It was totally invisible. How's that possible? They used the earth's
magnetic field. x The information was gathered and transmitted
undergruund to an unknown location. x Does langley know about this?
They should: it's buried out there somewhere. x Who knows the exact
location? Only WW. This was his last message. x Thirty eight degrees
fifty seven minutes six point five seconds north, seventy seven
degrees eight minutes forty four seconds west. ID by rows."
The encrypted text of the Kryptos sculpture has puzzled and challenged
quite a few people who tried to unveil its secrets, like the
mysterious coordinates. There has been speculation that the
coordinates point to the exact location of the Kryptos sculpture
itself. However, it is now clear that the sculpture is located
slightly north-west of that position, and that the coordinates
obviously refer to a nearby location in the very same courtyard.
Using precision positioning technology and aerial photographs, Chris
Hanson may have managed to find the mysterious location, though it is
still not clear what is so special about that point, only some meters
south-east of the sculpture.
