Please find me the quote or quotes regarding actors and class.
Director Ken Loach has said, "There are two things you cannot act.
You cannot act social class. And you cannot act being from a
different place." This may be a permutation of a quote from
Stanislavski, who supposedly said that the one thing an actor cannot
overcome is class. I've also heard a variation of this theme: that an
actor cannot overcome class or race.

Hope you can find the exact quote or quotes and originator(s). If it
IS Stanislavski, a good lead would probably be his book, "An Actor
Prepares." But I don't have a copy.
P.S. No rush on this.

Hello cryptica

I've found a citation for Loach saying that you can't hide your class
or the place you're from, *in films*. The context implies that he's
contrasting this with acting in the theatre.
The wording is not the same as your quotation and I'm not sure if it
would be a satisfactory answer for you. (No luck with Stanislavski!)

Please let us know what you think - thanks - Leli

Perhaps I should have said that the quotation I found is from a filmed
interview, not from a book or article.

Leli --
The Ken Loach quote sounds similar to what I already mentioned. My
wording actually comes from an interview that I was lucky enough to do
with him myself, but I know he's said it often, so what you're citing
is probably a variation, no?

I don't care whether the quote is talking about stage or film acting.
But I'd like to trace it back to the source. . .and I'm not convinced
(yet) that Ken Loach is it. However, I sure would LIKE to be
convinced that he is because other people tell me he isn't and I
happen to be a big admirer of Loach.

I wonder if a Nexis search would turn up something.

Lucky you, meeting Loach.
I'm afraid I misunderstood your question and have no ideas about who
else might have said such a thing.
Hope someone can help with this - Leli
