Question ID: 272472
I'm looking for a list of free or inexpensive* data mining tools for
use by a technology savvy business user (for Windows only please).
Please provide brief description, features and cost for each tool.

Inexpensive: single user license is below a $1,000.

Hi!

it seems that the ones used by business savvy people are not for free.
Another point is that these products seem to be priced according to
different user needs so they don't advertise their prices.

I found a website which evaluates software products for data mining.
Would pointing them out to the reviews plus their websites be enough
as a legitimate answer? Remember software prices will not be available
here only evaluations and reviews.

Thanks!

A reference to the site which lists the top commercial data mining
tools is not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for data mining tools
and utilities within the given price range ( 0 - $1,000), which
provide certain functionality for a user ready to get down and dirty,
but not necessary of a programmer pedigree... Meaning that the tools
are distributed as installable and executable software - not as binary
libraries, or source code.

Is this the type of thing you're looking for:

http://www.data-miner.com/

A single-user license starts at $29.

If this isn't it, let us know a bit more precisely what you need. And
if it IS what you're after, then how many such listings would you
consider to be acceptable as an answer to your question.

Yes, the data-miner is the kind of thing I'm looking for. An
acceptable answer would be either a reference to the source where the
tools like this one are listed and compared to each other, or a
compilation of such a comparision (compare user feedback, prices,
etc.) for which five - ten tools will do. Please remember - I'm
interested only in solutions available for Windows. Thank you.

Hello again, and thanks for asking a really interesting question.
I've followed data mining software developments in bits and pieces,
and this was a good opportunity to get more up to date as I researched
your question.

First thing I learned: A lot of the so-called "Knowledge Management"
companies haven't managed to learn to speak English...their sites are
dense, obscure and almost impossible to fathom. The second thing I
learned, is that a lot of them are out of business!

Third thing: most sites simply do not offer price information. I
always think this is a big business error, but there you have it. It
seems that the data mining software being offered is configurable in
so many different ways, that price lists are hard to come by.

That said, however, there are a number of professional looking sites
that are still in business, offer clear descriptions of their
products, and provided explicit prices or at least ballpark
information about costs. I did not come across any sites offering
comparative reviews or customer feedback on the applications.

I've summarized these below. If anything here is not clear, or if you
need additional information, let me know by posting a Request for
Clarification, and Ill be happy to assist you further.

Good luck with your mining efforts.

Magnum Opus: Setting New Standards in Association Rule Discovery

Magnum Opus finds association rules from data. Association rules
provide competitive advantage by revealing underlying interactions
between factors within the data. They are often used to gain insight
into the drivers of behavior, such as which products, when purchased,
drive the purchase of which other products.

[The price listed for the Windows version of this software is $840 as
seen at this link]:

http://www.rulequest.com/price-gen.html

[Magnum Opus is one of a suite of similarly-priced data mining tools]:

Effective data mining tools that:

--construct classifiers See5/C5.0 1.19
--build numerical models Cubist 1.12
--find association rules Magnum Opus 1.3
--identify data anomalies GritBot 1.05a
--Add our data import utility ODBCHook 1.01a [free until June 2004]

[No specific price given, other than to say that it's "a fraction of
the price" of competing products, but this product from Insightful.com
one sounds promising]:

DataMineIt?s solution to the computational demands of permutation
tests is PermuteIt? statistical software that performs fast,
two-sample permutation tests when one sample is large or both are
moderately sized and many permutation tests must be performed (e.g.
most multiple comparisons situations). PermuteIt has been benchmarked
against the available commercial alternatives (see table below or
.pdf) and has relative runtimes often more than an order of magnitude
faster under these conditions. This can make the difference between
meeting deadlines, or missing them, when performing thousands of
tests, and an hour?s runtime easily can become ten, twenty, or thirty
hours. This disparity obviously becomes even more magnified when, as
is the rule rather than the exception, analyses or reports need to be
rerun due to the receipt of revised data; or the reprocessing of the
input datasets; or any of the countless issues that arise when working
with large volumes of data.

[This is desktop PC software. No price is given, but a free demo
version is available from the site]

Cygron offers several award-winning data mining applications and
suites. The two that are probably most relevant to your situation
are:

DataScope Explorer:

KnowledgeMiner is a data mining tool that enables anyone to use its
unique form of modeling to quickly visualize new possibilities. It is
an artificial intelligence tool designed to easily extract hidden
knowledge from data. It was built on the cybernetic principles of
self-organization: Learning a completely unknown relationship between
output and input of any given system in an evolutionary way from a
very simple organization to an optimally complex one.

Here is a windows-based shareware program, the only shareware/freeware
I found that seemed to meet your specifications:

http://www.gr-fx.com/graf-fx.htm

Graf-FX® is ... designed to provide tools to explore your databases
with graphs and queries using a technique called Data Mining. It is
also a quick way to generate/prototype Access Graphs without running
the Wizards. If you are an Access/Office User, you don't need to learn
how to use another data mining product. All you have to do is link
your tables to any Access/ODBC database and then start exploring your
data. If you wish, you can then write your own queries to join tables
or limit the data returned and drilldown on these. The software
imports table and query filters to add initial flexibility to the
drilldowns without the need to write queries. This enables you to use
filter by example and filter by form.
