How do I create artificial "salt and pepper" color in my (male) hair? It is currently dark brown. Basically I am trying to look older than my age, and more distinguished. |

Well, I personally know a stage trick for this. Get a toothbrush (Not one you'll ever want to use for teeth, ew! :) Purchase a bottle of SaniWhite. It's a Non-Toxic white shoe polish used for Baby's Shoes (Baby's stick their feet in their mouths. :) Pour a bit of the Shoe Polish on the brush, and work it into the hair starting at the temples and brushing backward. With practice you can do the whole head to any degree of Salt VS Pepper. This works for beards as well. It will not stand extreme inspection, and it will begin to flake after a few hours, but this is a tried-and-true Theater method to achieve the look you are going for. Also, dosfordonts.com sells Wigs in this and many other colors. :) Alternate Links http://www.dosfordonts.com/haircolor.html | |

Good answer for temp/costume applications, although I was looking for a permanent, professional solution. |

Or..for a more permanant (and realistic!) look, have it professionally colored. Find yourself a high-end hair dresser and tell them what you want. They'll do it right. --K~ |

If you can find some henna (myrtal) powder it would do, boil two tea bags in 100 ml of tap water add five teaspoon full of henna powder and half spoon of common table salt and boil for 5 minutes, then brush or mix content(cold) to your hair ; leave it to dry then clean with shampoo. |

It's also very easy to do this at home. Many people color their hair at home. I can tell you how I would do it, since I have some training in the area...but this is not a gaurentee. What you need to do is go to a beauty supply store, say, Sally Beauty Supply. All you need is a packet of bleach, a tipping cap and hook, a grey hair color, developer in a 40V and a 30V, Gloves, a haircolor brush and a friend to help you out. Place the tipping cap on your head, and pull hair thru with the hook, in the places you want the grey to be. Then mix the bleach according the the instructions with the 40V developer. Paint it on the hair you pulled thru the cap, making sure it's totally covered with the bleach, and let it process according to directions til it's a very light blonde. If yu have dark hair, it will go thru many shades of reds and blonde till it gets there. Then, leaving the cap on, rinse out all the bleach and shampoo to neutralize and remaning bleach. Dry the hair with the cap still on and mix the color with the 30V developer, making sure the ratio of developer to color follows the instructions. Place it on the hair outside of the cap that you just bleached, letting it process for about 30 minutes, and then rinse it off, following with a good deep conditioner. This will give you Grey hilights, or....salt and pepper. Same thing a professional stylist would do, but I just prob saved you $60. Hope this is another option for you. Nenna-GA |
