From a survey by the National Association of Estate Agents in the UK:

50% of buyers move within a five mile radius
70% of buyers move within a 15 mile radius
14% of buyers move more than 100 miles away

“When it comes to moving house, the majority of people like to stay
close to home - so says the largest organisation representing estate
agents in the UK. A survey of members by the National Association of
Estate Agents (NAEA) reveals that around 50 percent of buyers tend to
move within a five-mile radius and 70 percent within a 15-mile radius.
Only 14 percent move more than 100 miles away.”

In the UK the most popular distance of homebuyers is 11-20 miles away:

“Great news for removals companies today, as new research released by
the Woolwich showed that home buyers are moving further than ever
before. However, for most people, moving house doesn't exactly mean a
long haul, with the most popular distance still only being 11 - 20
miles.”

“The most popular distance to move is between 11-20 miles.”

“The number of people moving more than 50 miles has more than doubled
from last year, from 7 percent in 2000 to 16 percent in 2001.”

“In 1997 people were most likely to move a distance of between six and
ten miles, showing that five years on people are more likely to move
further.”

“A quarter of homebuyers moved a distance of between one and five
miles in 1997 compared to only 1 percent in 2001.”

Demographics of short and long distance home buyers:

“Short-distance buyers (those who purchase within five miles of their
previous residence) have an advantage over other buyers—they typically
have an adequate grasp of the neighborhood and better access to local
sources of real estate information.”

“Results from NAR’s recent survey of home buyers and sellers indicate
that there are differences among those who purchase homes close to
their previous residence and those who purchase more than 100 miles
away from where they used to live.”

“The typical short-distance buyer is 40 years old, married with a
household income of $63,600. Results from the survey show that 45
percent of these buyers are first-time homebuyers, and usually move
either because they “wanted to own a home” (48 percent) or because
they desired more space (25 percent).”

“Long-distance buyers are typically older (46 years) than short
distance buyers. Like short-distance buyers, most are married, but the
median annual household income for long distance buyers is $10,000
higher. Nearly half of all long-distance buyers move because of a new
job or a corporate relocation. Long-distance buyers are also far more
likely than short distance buyers to move because of retirement or
because they want to be closer to their job, school or relatives.”
