I am trying to find out the manufacturer of the actual turbine used in
the mammoth Australian solar chimney. I know the contractor building
the tower is a German company and they worked with a hydro-turbine
manufacturer.
It is a 100MW+ turbine. Who actually made it and what did it cost?
Any actual specifications would merit a nice tip |

Can you please provide more information on the location of the
chimney? Is it the solar powered chimney that is intended to be build
by 2005 in Austrlaia's outback (height ~ 1000 m).
Thanks.

I found the site of the German company doing the design of the Solar
Chimney plant, but there's no mention of the name of the other company
except that it's an Indian contractor. Have you heard this one about
the Indian company?

I have seen a reference to a SriLankan company regarding this. They
seem to be the ones that predate the Australian tower.
Probably this one: http://www.gluckman.com/SolarChimney.html
This will take some digging. Can you find the specific maker of the
turbine?

Yes, I've seen that one, so it appears that there are similar projects
going on alongside the Solar Chimney in Australia. I doubt though the
Sri Lankan company is the turbine maker, and I also have a little
doubt that the Indian company might be the turbine maker. I'll see
what can be found.

Sorry if I've been out for too long, but I suppose that Solar Tower
project construction hasn't started yet. I'm assuming a turbine maker
hasn't been selected yet, though the construction contractor has been
disclosed. But I also assume that contractor is not the maker of the
turbine (or turbines, it seems the number of turbines hasn't been
decided yet). I wouldn't be surprised if that project were delayed by
some problems in funding or other stuff. That's how it looks to me
with the sites I've looked at. If I'm wrong, I or someone else will be
back with updated information.

Hmmm...
Do you know of the possible turbine makers that are bidding, or could
bid? There can't be too many companies that have this sort of thing.

Hello again Clb108,
I emailed Enviromission, the company that handles the Solar Tower
project and they returned with this message:
"We have not yet finalised the details with regard to the manufacture and
supply of the turbines. Please keep up to date via our website for the
information as it breaks.
We would not envisage this information to be finalised until early 2004."
I'll see if I can get information on prospective bidders.
