i'm seeking information on taking intensive cantonese lessons in the
new york city/long island new york area.

- the lessons would have to be given in the evening or on weekends,
and would be given either one-on-one or in a very small group.
- the instruction must cover both written and spoken cantonese.
- the instruction needs to range from beginning (little or no
knowledge) up to fluency (conversing comfortably with native
speakers).

reviews of various services would be appreciated.

Kurenai,

I found two solid resources that should provide you with what you need
along with some supplemental items that I think you'll find
interesting. The two major organizations I've listed can also help
you find a private tutor if that's the route you prefer to go. Please
feel free to clarify if you need further information!

Cantonse Course

"Foremost in importance among non-Mandarin dialects, Cantonese is the
primary means of communication in Hong Kong, Southern China and many
of the Chinatown neighborhoods around the United States. In this
course, students learn to read, write and speak from the first
session, with all of these elements balanced throughout the course of
study. The instructor is a native speaker of Cantonese with an
advanced degree in Chinese language and literature. Lessons are
enhanced with supplementary materials where useful. Knowledge of
Mandarin is helpful, but not a prerequisite."

WOSSING CENTER FOR CHINESE

"A professional service center based in New York City, Chinatown: a
power-house of New York-based educators, linguists and artistes,
conversant in world cultures and the global marketplace." Site
indicates that classes are for 2-6 students which should meet your
small class requirement.

An outdated description of their classes (they do still offer courses,
however, as I asked this of the receptionist on the phone).

CORNELL UNIVERSITY

Although several hours away from Long Island or New York City, I
thought including the link to Cornell was worthwhile as they have a
solid university curriculum on the Cantonese languge.
