Dear Bernie,

Why do you think that St. Mungo is a name of a town? There is a very
famous scottish "Saint Mungo", but it's not a town/village.

Hello Bernie

St. Mungo was certainly a Scottish saint, but there's no town bearing
his name. He's the patron saint of Glasgow and thought of as founder
of the city. If you'd like to hear more about this as an answer to
your question, do let us know.

Thanks - Leli

St. Mungo appears to be a part of Lockerbie. I have found two
pictures of the scenery at St. Mungo, but not of a town. My sense is
that it is not so much a town as an area. (The only "history" I have
found is in the form of some genealogical pages that mention St.
Mungo.)

Would this information be sufficient for an answer?

I have an old letter that states:"Francis George Smith a farmer was
born 1840 in Dumfries Scotland. He was the son of David Smith who was
born in 1799 at St Mungo, Dumfrieshire Scotland".
Tha is the only reason for thinking that there is a town. Maybe it is
only a Parish or area!

I have seen similar statements in online genealogical records. I do
believe it is a parish or an area. If you would like an answer along
the lines that I have indicated relating to St. Mungo, please let me
know.

I am happy with any information and pictures about the Parish of St
Mungo if it is not a town and that appears to be the case. Is there a
church called st Mungo in that area?
Thank You

Hello bernietwo-ga,

As I mentioned, there are similar records to the one you mentioned,
referring to a St. Mungo in Dumfriesshire.

'Searched the web for "st mungo dumfriesshire" OR "st mungo dumfrieshire"'
Google
://www.google.com/search?q=%22st+mungo+dumfriesshire%22+OR+%22st+mungo+dumfrieshire%22&num=30&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&filter=0

More currently, it is associated with Lockerbie.

'Searched the web for "st mungo lockerbie"'
Google
://www.google.com/search?q=%22st+mungo+lockerbie%22&num=30&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&filter=0

It is more specifically associated with Kettleholm, a village near
Lockerbie. There are two references to St. Mungo Parish Church,
apparently built in the 1870s (and not to be confused with churches of
the same name in Alloa and Penicuik).

'Searched the web for "st mungo" kettleholm'
Google
://www.google.com/search?q=%22st+mungo%22+kettleholm+&num=30&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&filter=0

St. Mungo is described as a parish, lying on the stream called the Water of Milk.

'Searched the web for "st mungo" "water of milk"'
Google
://www.google.com/search?q=%22st+mungo%22+%22water+of+milk%22&num=30&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&filter=0

Along with Water of Milk, Castlemilk is associated with St. Mungo.
The two pictures I have found for St. Mungo depict Castlemilk.

You can get a good sense of the geography by scrolling and zooming in
or out on this map of the area around Kettleholm.

A fellow Researcher (thanks Leli!) has noted that the following map
shows St. Mungo's parish around 1830:

Some more information relating to St. Mungo is available if you select
"St. Mungo" in the list of primary schools on this page:

To learn more, you might try contacting the school, or the member of
the Dumfries & Galloway Council from St Mungo:

The search terms I used on Google are indicated in the answer, except
that I also searched for "st mungo" in conjunction with the terms:

dumfries
annan

My first Google search and very satisfied for my money.
