Hi Conpak ~ I like penguins, too! I didn't realize southern Argentina even had penguins (not that I can recall giving it much thought one way or the other), but I found out there are three species of penguin indiginous to southern Argentina: * Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) (not hard to figure who that was named after) * Southern Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) (looks like a bad hair day on that one) * Macaroni Penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus) (his tux has some bright colors to it) There is some interesting information on these penguins - which are also in southern Chile and to a lesser degree, the Falkland Islands - on the International Penguin Conservation Work Group's website: - http://www.penguins.cl/patagonia.htm I also found a few vivid photos on the Frederico Bechis website. Bechis is a professional photographer, and his photos of southern Argentina and Antartica are vivid. - http://www.federicobechis.com/english/photos-landscape-antarctica-patagonia-argentina.shtml Finally, here's a page by a teacher from Helena, Montana who visited a beach in southern Argentina with lots of penguins. One can tell she was both enchanted and very curious - and apparently, so were the very friendly penguins. Click on the smaller pictures to see them in more detail, but who can resist these guys? - http://www.opi.state.mt.us/wtfalcon/Penquin.HTML Search terms - - penguins + southern Argentina - penguins + patagonia Thanks again for asking this question, it gave me the chance to take the time to get to know these extraordinary birds. Hey thanks for the pictures and information. I had a brother that lived in Punta Arenas, chile for awhile and I couldn't belive there were penguines down there! I guess its just an odd fascination. Maybe someday he and I will take a trip to Chile and Argentina, but right now it just wishful thinking! |

When I visited Punta Arenas, I went to a "Pingüinera" near the city (around 1 hour car trip), I toke some fascinating pictures, it was my first approach to wild penguins. |
