I can't delete a mpeg video file that was shared with me through Limewire. I beleive what it really did was install what I think is called "scumware" as I get a message saying that it is "being used by another person or program" and I should "close any programs that might be using the file". I realize that this junk was probably designed in such a way as to not be deleted but there must be a way. Any ideas? |

Good Day mcube-ga, The problem you are experiencing appears to be a common one under Windows XP. If you are running a different version of Windows, the below link and information will still be useful, so please have a read. Website: Annoyances.org - Unable to delete files URL: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1061299714 There are a few ways you can go about resolving this problem. Some ways are easier to execute, but have a smaller chance of working. Then there are much "bolder" ways which will most likely work, but are a little tougher to execute, and leave more room for breaking something else. I would recommend booting into safe mode, and trying to delete the file from there. Safe mode is simply your standard windows, loaded only with the bare bones. No unnecessary drivers or software, just the frame work. Website: How to start your computer in Safe Mode URL: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam Once you are in safe mode, your computer will look very similar to what you are used to seeing: the graphical user interface. From here, try deleting the file as you normally would. There are a few other ways that might be a little easier, but they are tough to explain via text, and pretty much impossible to explain without knowing your Operating System (see the first link for some of those ways). If my recommendations do not work up to this point, please let me know what operating system you are running (i.e. Windows XP, Windows 98, etc.), and I can send you step by step instructions for other methods of file removal. Good luck, and please keep me posted! Search Strategy: Google search for ?delete?+?being used by another? ?safe mode?+?how? Regards, slawek-ga |

Hi mcube In addition to the advice by the answers expert, I wish to say that when you use Limewire or Kazaa then you are prone to spyware and other aggressive data mining programs. If you had read carefully in the Licence agreementof these asoftwares they clearly mention this. So they cannot be considered as illegal. Now if you wish to remove them, which is your right, then you can go to the website http://www.lavasoft.com and download the free Adaware utility. THis finds and deletes all data tracking components installed on your system. They cannot be deleted directly because they are already loaded in memory as registered system processes and will not exit for most parts. Also even if y ou do end the process they will get reinstalled again. So the solution is to use adaware regularly to get rid of tem. Then try to delete this file. I think it should work. I may not be right about that particular file but you will see a drastic improvementin your computer performance after you have done that. If you feel my answer is correct please send a comment for me to the editors of this site. thanks with regards Amit |
