I've got Windows XP, and it seems as though the DHCP client has died.
It can't be repaired from normal means. Dell support said I have to
do a complete reformat and reinstall of the entire operating system,
but this seems so ridiculous to me. Is there any way around this??

I just did a repair install, and that hasn't done anything. :(

Dell support may be right, but have you looked under 'Services'
to see whether DHCP Client is showing up, and what its status is?

Go to 'Start' -> 'Run', type 'services.msc' w/o quotes, and hit
'Enter'. See what's there for the DHCP Client.

Hi sublime1 -

It says it's "starting", as opposed to "Started." So it's stuck in
some sort of "starting" status, and it wont actually start.

Your reply does not bode well for the chances of fixing the
service without reinstalling Windows. The fact that it's
'starting' means it's unlikely you can intervene with it
while it is 'in process', as such. One slim chance, if
you're not too attached to the username with which you
normally log onto Windows, is to try and log on under a
new username, and see if the service will complete the
startup process in that case. Let me know your results.

sublime1-

Thanks for the suggestion. However, at this point, it seems as though
I have to reinstall anyway. The Start button is now completely
garbled with strange symbols, as is some of text on the headline of
other windows. The background is disappearing. Wonder if a virus
made its way in.
