Hello Crystal,
Thank you for your clarification. The digital mammography market is
very active and it?s closely monitored by several of the big market
research firms. I?ve listed the recent reports I?ve found just in case
you want to buy one of them or perhaps the company you?re thinking of
investing in might be interested in this type of detailed information.
Reviewing the table of contents for these reports can also give you a
quick overview of the issues that are worth considering.
As I indicated in my clarification request, I?ve found some excerpts
from some of these reports. They all show that the digital mammography
is in its infancy but is likely to grow at a rapid rate as analog
systems are phased out. The market valuation projections will give you
some basis for evaluating your investment opportunity.
In addition, I was able to find a few statistics for unit sales of
digital mammography equipment. Further research on specific
manufacturers you might be interested in could possibly lead to
additional information along these lines.
I also suggest that you register at Aunt Minnie. http://www.auntminnie.com/
It?s free and it is an exceptionally good resource for news and
information about every aspect of the medical imaging industry.
Please don?t hesitate to ask for clarification if anything I?ve
provided is confusing.
Wishing you well with your investment.

X-Ray Mammography Markets in North America and Japan and the Rest-of-the-World
PRODUCT TYPE: Market Report

Future of Mammography Equipment Industry Lies with Digital Systems
Most researchers and organizations continue to affirm that breast
screening is the best existing method for early detection of breast
cancer, though certain researchers are questioning the value of
screening mammography in reducing breast cancer mortality. However,
everyone agrees that X-ray mammography, in its current form, generates
far too many unnecessary diagnostic procedures. Digital mammography,
with key developments such as tomosynthesis, is poised to change this
situation.
This Frost & Sullivan study analyzes the North American, Japanese, and
Rest-of-World markets for X-ray mammography equipment and provides a
geographic analysis of market drivers, restraints, and forecasts,
identifying areas of growth. The study covers analog screening
systems, prone mammographic biopsy systems, full-field digital
mammography (FFDM) systems, digital spot mammography add-on systems,
and computed radiography mammography systems.

MARKET TRENDS ? DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY

FDA - Digital Accreditation
On September 2, 2003, FDA approved the American College of Radiology
(ACR) to accredit Lorad Selenia full field digital mammography (FFDM)
units beginning September 15, 2003. ACR has now been approved to
accredit all of the currently FDA-approved FFDM systems (Lorad
Selenia, GE Senographe 2000D and Fischer Imaging SenoScan).
***** This is a listing of the key players in the full-field digital
mammography (FFDM) market.

Shift to full-field digital units will spur mammography market
4/30/03
Despite the hype surrounding FFDM, revenues from analog systems still
outpace digital units. In 2002, new analog mammography screening
equipment generated $142.7 million in sales, compared with $69.6
million from digital screening (flat-panel, slot-scanning, and
computed radiography) systems. Digital spot mammography systems (both
add-on and dedicated prone units) generated $28.9 million in sales
last year.
By 2009, however, FFDM units are expected to contribute 70% of
mammography revenues, compared to only 18% for analog systems. This
conversion will be driven by economic factors such as low
reimbursement rates, and by operational issues such as facility
consolidation and the need to boost throughput, García said.
FFDM units are four to five times more expensive than analog systems,
driving up revenues even as overall mammography unit sales are
declining, García said. In terms of procedures, analog systems
performed 34.6 million screening studies in North America in 2002,
compared with just 1.6 million on flat-panel digital systems.

Imaging Trends
May 25, 2003
2003 MAY 25 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The emergence of digital
mammography and the long replacement cycle of current systems in the
market are drying up the demand for analog mammography in highly
industrialized countries.
Along with improved diagnostic capabilities, digital systems offer
considerable economic benefits over analog systems in terms of overall
operational costs. While this drives the adoption of digital systems
in industrialized countries, the considerably less-expensive analog
systems will find better markets in developing countries.
The rising demand for full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and
computed radiography (CR) mammography is the most dynamic factor
maintaining healthy growth rates in the total mammography industry.

Hologic Q3 revenues, income up
8/7/03
Hologic reported fiscal third-quarter revenues of $52.4 million, up 9%
compared with the $48 million booked in the 2002 fiscal third quarter.
For the period (end-June 28), the Bedford, MA-based vendor had net
income of $1.1 million, compared with net income of $492,000 last
year.
In quarterly highlights, Hologic shipped a record 18 Selenia
full-field digital mammography (FFDM) systems, 16 of which were
recognized as revenue during the quarter. As of the end of June,
Hologic had a backlog of 50 orders for Selenia.

5. Market Analysis
U.S. medical imaging services are provided through 2,300 large
hospitals and 3,300 free-standing diagnostic imaging centers and
chains (DICs). Free-standing DICs are owned by professional
radiologist groups, partnerships with hospitals, and for-profit
corporations. Thirty-seven percent of the DICs are located in four
states: New York, Florida, Texas, and California. All states have at
least one operational DIC, except Vermont (SMG Marketing Group, 2000).
MAMMOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT MARKET
As of 2000, the installed U.S. base of mammography units (including
conventional film and full-field digital systems) was 15,300.
Worldwide installed base was approximately 30,000 units, with 10,270
units in Europe (Garcia, 2001).
The digital mammography market is evolving into a three-tiered structure.
-- FFDM units with a-Si and selenium detector panels represent the
premium quality market segment.
-- Tiled CCD units using crystalline detectors represent the less
expensive, middle tier of the FFDM market. ?Most places going with
CCDs are small radiology clinics who want to get some of the benefits
of DM but do not have the high volume and productivity requirements to
purchase a premium a-Si FFDM unit? (Schubert, 2002).
-- Small-field digital mammography (SFDM) using single CCD crystal
detectors for partial imaging of the breast represents the third tier.
The target application for SFDM units is diagnostic rather than
screening mammography.

Mammography market stands at crossroads
9/25/01
By: Frost & Sullivan analyst
Full-field digital mammography
Installments of the new systems have gotten off to a slow start, but
are steadily increasing. According to Frost & Sullivan research, the
worldwide installed base of FFDM units is estimated at over 160, and
has the potential to exceed 2,000 units by 2007. The Frost & Sullivan
report also reveals that, in the year 2000, full-field digital
mammography garnered an estimated 12% of global mammography equipment
revenues.
Although GE Medical Systems' Senographe 2000D is currently the only
FDA-approved FFDM product on the market, several other manufacturers
are poised to enter the fray over the next few years. These include
Fischer Imaging and Hologic, which both have products under FDA
review, as well as Instrumentarium Imaging, Siemens Medical Solutions,
Eastman Kodak, and Sectra Medical, with products in various stages of
development.
Although many facility administrators balk at the current list price
of nearly $500,000, future availability of competing FFDM products
should lower prices substantially.
