Hello kivo-ga!
I?ve noticed that you are asking a series of interesting questions and
I am keeping an eye on many of them to see what my colleagues find and
to learn more for myself! And I am also excited to answer one of your
questions myself! Here goes, broken down by your specific questions:
What percentage of the world is obese? What percentage of the world is overweight?
From the WHO (World Health Organization) website
http://www.who.int/hpr/gs.fs.obesity.shtml#::%20FACTS:
?Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, with more than 1
billion adults overweight - at least 300 million of them clinically
obese - and is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic
disease and disability.?
16.7% of the world?s population is overweight. 5% of the world?s
population is obese.
The WHO presented their information in terms of individuals, so I?ve
done the calculations for this answer using an interesting website
that displays world population. It can be found here:
http://www.ibiblio.org/lunarbin/worldpop and is run by a collaboration
of the Center for the Public Domain and the University of North
Carolina-Charlotte.
Oh, and by the way, if you are interested in the whys and hows and
wherefores in addition to the numbers, you may want to check out more
information found at the WHO link above.

Of these people, how many live in the United States?
From the website for the United States National Institute of Diabetes
and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), a division of the National
Institutes of Health:
http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/nutrit/pubs/statobes.htm#preval
There are 129.6 million overweight adults in the U.S. There are 61.3
million obese adults in the U.S.

And because I found something interesting and wanted to share it with
you, I?m including some facts from yet another reputable site that may
be of assistance to you.
Also, from the website for the United States National Institute of
Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), a division of the
National Institutes of Health:
http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/nutrit/pubs/statobes.htm#preval
?Q: How many adults are overweight?
A: Nearly two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight (BMI > 25, which
includes those who are obese).
Q: How many adults are obese?
A: Nearly one-third of U.S. adults are obese (BMI > 30).
Q: How many adults are at a healthy weight?
A: Less than half of U.S. adults have a healthy weight (BMI > 18.5 to < 25)."
I think that what is so interesting to me about the above facts is the
3rd section (quoted above) about healthy weight. We so often hear
about obesity and overweight (another interesting thing that I?ve
learned in doing this research for you is that the word ?overweight?
is also considered a noun?I?m getting used to it . . . ) that we don?t
often hear figures on healthy weight. I found the fact that ?less than
half of U.S. adults have a healthy weight? interesting. It puts the
other figures about obesity and overweight into perspective.
Thank you for an interesting question! If anything is unclear, please
let me know how I can clarify the information for you. Thank you,
again!
Sincerely,
Boquinha-ga

Some notes about my research for this question:
Please keep in mind that accurate information available about obesity
and overweight uses year 2000 data in correlation with the most recent
U.S. census.
I conducted a number of searches and was careful to reference
reputable sites (such as the World Health Organization.) While the
majority of these types of organizations have focused in the past
mainly on adult obesity and overweight, there is a growing concern for
the rise in obesity and overweight in children and adolescents; more
and more research is being done in that area as well.
