Just reinstalled Windows XP on my computer, and it seems as though the
True Type Hebrew font that I was using now displays "squares" for many
of the characters (in Word and in the Character Map utility). I
downloaded some other Hebrew fonts, and it seems to be doing the same
thing. Is there something I have to install or change?

Hello barryf-ga,

It appears that Windows XP does not officially support Hebrew as a
language, even though Windows 2000 had this support. A list of the
languages that Windows XP supports after installation is available
here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;292246&Product=winxp

If it was working before, you may have been using a computer that was
upgraded from Windows 2000, or someone may have installed support for
Hebrew fonts.

I believe that your problem will be solved after you install support
for the Hebrew language. I found a solution in Google Groups that
should help you do this:

"To be able to enter and display Hebrew text, go to Control Panel and click
on "Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options," then click on "Add other
languages." Check the box labeled "Install files for complex script and
right-to-left languages (including Thai)." Click on the Details... button,
and in the Text Services and Input Languages window that appears, click the
Add... button. Select Hebrew from the Input Language dropdown list, then
click OK on all three windows."

I hope that this answer will help you! Please let me know if you
require any clarifications, and I will then do my best to further
assist you.

Hello -

Thanks for the fast response! However, it didn't work. :(

I had no trouble using the font in XP prior to the fresh
reinstallation. I followed these instructions, rebooted, and it's
still displaying the squares.

Please try following these directions step by step (start at the
bottom where it says Option 2):

http://www.petri.co.il/install_hebrew_on_xp.htm

In the meantime, I am going to do some more research to see what I can
find out for you.

Please let me know what happens,

I saw that page shortly after you posted the answer. I'll check it
out. Also, to let you know, I downloaded another Hebrew font that
works fine!

Those instructions on that page are the exact instructions I followed.

I found another Groups posting where someone seems to have had the same problem:

If you have Microsoft Excel installed, can you try opening it up and
seeing if the fonts display as rectangles there?

There are some additional instructions in this file.

http://www.ssdsofessexandunion.org/tech/hebrew.doc

The information is also available in HTML format, but the Doc version looks better.

these all sound like great suggestions, and it seems as though they
would work, but it's still not doing it, strangely enough.

at this point, if I go into the character map, I can see hebrew
letters for the font, but it's not the true hebrew letters of that
"stam" font. I can even copy those letters into the clipboard and
paste them into Word (btw, I don't have Excel). They display within
Word after pasting them, and I can change the size of them, but it's
effectively the wrong font. In addition, if I try to type within Word
using that font, it switches automatically back to Times New Roman.
strange, huh!

One thing I realized I haven't done is installed any service packs
since I did the fresh installation. Wonder if this could have
anything to do with it?

A couple months ago we had sent this computer to a technician and had
him do a completely fresh format/install of XP. Loaded everything
back on with no problems. Now, I'm doing essentially the same thing,
but I'm having problems with this font. The only possible difference
is the service pack that I can see. any connection?

Hello barryf,

I considered the service pack idea myself, but after combing through
all the updates, I could not find a fix for langauges.

You could update your computer at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
with the latest updates, and maybe it would make a difference. It will
take some time, and probably several reboots and going back to get new
updates, but you should do this anyway and it might help.

I was asking you to check with Microsoft Excel, because with Microsoft
Word, the appearance of text is sometimes changes based on the default
printer. Microsoft Excel ignores the default printer driver when
displaying text. I do not believe that this is our problem however,
unless you have a very ancient printer installed.

What version of Microsoft Office do you have?

barryf,

Maybe the custom made articles are making us miss something. Here is a
version from Microsoft that might have more clear instructions:

I am going to look for your response tomorrow morning!

Well, I installed all the updates. didn't make a bit of difference in
the language dept. I've got just the Word component of Microsoft
Works installed (not Office), and an HP 1100 printer. I'm completely
puzzled over this thing. We have had and used this font for ages, and
now all of a sudden it's having problems. But it doesn't seem limited
to this font, because other fonts do it and only certain ones at that.
 For instance, on this page:

http://user.dtcc.edu/~berlin/font/hebrew.htm

The Lashon Tov font looks basically fine, but the Dor font does the
rectangles (when I double click the TTF files).

barryf,

I have not really been able to find anything else at this time for you
to try. Perhaps you want to try contacting Microsoft directly about
this problem?

You can register Microsoft Works and find the contact information at this website:

http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/support/default.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/support/support.asp
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;Prodoffer47&sd=GN

I recommend that you go to the website and use the online support.
This will upload some files relating to your problem to Microsoft, and
the Microsoft support professional will be able to (hopefully) quickly
diagnose your problem.

Please let me know if this works for you?
