There are many (hundreds of) excellent books on this topic, for example: The Scientific Revolution and the Origins of Modern Science (John Henry). See also the writings of Carl Jung. However, assuming you really do want a very simplified summary: As a result of the Newtonian Revolution, alchemy was replaced by chemistry, astrology was replaced by astronomy, etc. Alchemy is defined as an early form of chemistry, with philosophical and magical associations. Alchemy is a seamless blending of inner psychological transformation (the search for "psychological gold") while gazing for days into a crucible of chemical reactions (the attempt to transform base metals into gold). Sir Issac Newton (1642-1727) practiced both halves of these sciences -- the interior mystical quest, and the external science where every hypothesis must be proven true or false, by performing experiments which can be reproduced by any researcher. The Newtonian Revolution, by distilling the practice of alchemy into the science of chemistry, enabled man to enslave nature to his own ends -- hence the rapid advance of material prosperity in Modern Europe, vs. the "stagnation" of Medieval Europe. The holy trinity of science is: knowledge, prediction, control. Thus, this "shift in perception" transformed Medieval Europe into Modern Europe. One negative consequence of this "shift of perception" was the suppression and devaluing of the mystical -- the "Newtonian clockwork universe" in which, given the position and initial velocity of every particle in the universe, the future is predictable in every detail -- a universe in which everything is predictable, cold and dead. In the 20th century the psychologist Carl Jung (and many others) reinvigorated civilization by mining the "philosophical gold" which had been paved over by the Newtonian Revolution. For example, Jung discovered that all of the symbols of alchemy are alive and numinous in the collective unconscious of humankind; these symbols find expression in our dreams. |

The answer is embedded in the question... that mechanical motion based upon the rolling of a wheel, actions and reactions caould be made to happen under the preasure of steam in a cylinder and this motion could be put to work by assembling apparatus which evolved into steam engines which were at first staionary and then became mobile. What prompted this discovery was the freedom to think the impossible by experiment, and the shaping of that inquiry by need... to move heavy objects in the case of the development of the steam engine it was coal. We will never know who made the first discoveries but the ideas fell into the hands of early engineers like Richard Trevithick and quicky progressed through names like George Stevenson. It happenned in the Celtic regions which have always shown advancement in technological thinking... the Romans used celtic swordsmiths as they held the best knowledge of metalurgy at the time. The rapid development of steam power and transport systems thgoughout the United Kingdom gave Britain thirty or forty years head start in the explosion of economic growth of the industrial revolution. Britain managed to shape the world as we know it which is why more than 70% of all world registered patents are British. They invented everything from plate glass to copper pipes, methods for making steel to the computer you use at present. Some people look at the British as the leading world civilisation... even ahead of the United States, which has all the money... yet the British have all the brains. They are a little bit odd, isolated but they seem to have one of the best systems under which to live. And still they have a Queen which is the oldest of all systems going way back in tradition to ancient egypt. The Newtonian revolution shifted the perception of europe and the world to realise we live on one planet and are one species. We should be grateful to the British for brining us to where we now are. In fact thier system seems to work so well that we could adopt their Queen to become a World Queen. If it works then lets do it. |

"In fact their system seems to work so well that we could adopt their Queen to become a World Queen." A World Queen? Wow. Would California's Governor be able to run for World Queen after the current Queen dies? |
