I have seen two newspaper photos of Canadian infantry serving in the
greater Kabul region of Afghanistan as part of ISAF/NATO and they have a
national flag shoulder patch and then under that ISAF and then under
that a third patch which appears to have a large Fleur de lys symbol
bracketed
by some letters. It might be a regimental symbol.

patch one is Canadian flag.
patch two is the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)

Q) What is patch three with the fleur de lys?

Hi grthumongous,

In addition to the Canadian Flag, the shoulder badges issued to
Canadian troops assigned to Operation Athena are:

1) International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)
2) Kabul Multi-National Brigade (KMNB)

"Each of the troops was issued a box lunch, a country familiarization
booklet and an ISAF shoulder flash that includes the plain ISAF patch
in English and Arabic and the insignia of the Kabul Multi-National
Brigade with a fleur-de-lis and a cougar head."

Kabul Multinational Brigade:
"Canada is the lead nation for the Kabul Multinational Brigade, under
the command of Brig Gen Peter Devlin. Of the more than 30 troop
contributing nations, Canada provides 1,200 of the 2,600 total
personnel within the brigade. Under the KMNB are three battle groups,
led by the Germans, the French, and the Canadians. The KMNB is
responsible for the tactical command of the troops on the ground."

The road to Kabul:
"ISAF was structured into three main components: ISAF headquarters,
the Kabul Multinational Brigade and the Kabul International Airport
task force. The Kabul Multinational Brigade is ISAF?s tactical
headquarters, responsible for the planning and conduct of patrolling
and civil-military cooperation operations on a day-to-day basis. The
United Kingdom provided the core of ISAF?s three components until it
turned over the leadership of the Kabul Multinational Brigade to
Germany in March 2002. These three components have endured through the
successive ISAF rotations to this day."
