In Microsoft Office 2003 applications, particularly in Word 2003, a
"Getting Started" task pane automatically opens up (on right hand
side) when the application is opened and whenever a new or existing
document is opened. This is very annoying. It just tasks up useless
space on the screen and I'd rather not have to manually close the task
panes. Is there a way to set it so they don't automatically open?

Try this:

1. Start the program.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. On the View tab, click to clear the Startup Task Pane check box,
and then click OK.

Please let me know whether or not this solves your problem.

Hi. Good thinking but, alas, I tried that before (and again just now)
and it's doesn't fix it. The Getting Started task pane still pops up
every time. I've run run the Detect and Repair function (in case
there's an error that's stopping the step you describe from working
properly) but that doesn't work.

Are you comfortable with a solution of the problem that involves
editing the registry? If so, this newsgroup thread proposes a fix (see
the last post in the thread:

Please let me know if this works for you so that I can post this
information as an official answer.

Hello Healthresultsgroup,
Does that pane you want closed have a cartoon character also shown? It
might be the Office Assistant.

Hi, techtor-ga. No, it's not Office Assistant. Thankfully, Microsoft
allows users to easily shut that off.

Hello again Healthresultsgroup,
I see. I use Office 2002 in my computer, and there used to be the pane
on the right of Word showing all the recently used files. I unchecked
a box saying "show at startup" at the bottom, so it didn't appear
anymore when I started Word. Is this the kind of task pane you want
off?

Hi, techtor-ga. Sort of. In Word 2003 (and other Office 2003
applications), the "Getting Started" task pane is different than the
one in Word 2002. In addition, to having a different layout, the Word
2003 task pane does not have the "show at start up" box to check /
uncheck. When I installed Office 2003, that was the first thing I
tried to do but no option.

I am glad to have been able to help you solve your perplexing problem.
I'm still using an earlier version of Microsoft Word, so I hadn't
experienced this yet. It is odd that the Microsoft Knowledge Base
mentions it, but gives as a solution only a suggestion about the
Startup Task Pane check box.

Below I've posted the registry fix which appeared in the
microsoft.public.office.setup newsgroup:

"From: Jeremy (jeroenpe@everyday.com)
Subject: RE: StartUp task pane Office 2003
 Newsgroups: microsoft.public.office.setup

Fred, 5 minutes after my 1 message I found a solution: go to registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\General\DoNotDismissFileNewTaskPane

The value of the entry should be set to 0"

Thread from microsoft.public.office.setup newsgroup
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&newwindow=1&safe=off&th=28dbe564679a1f26&seekm=6457AF9E-9F0D-45D8-A4D5-FEE3D5DCE035%40microsoft.com&frame=off

I tried several combinations of search terms while seeking this
information. This is the combination that led me to the post which
mentioned the registry fix:

Google Groups Search: "task pane" + "startip" + "word 2003"
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22task+pane%22+%22startup%22+%22word+2003%22

Thanks for an interesting research project! I'm sure this info will
come in handy for others who have Word 2003, and for those (like me)
who plan to acquire it in the future.

Best regards,
