Some years ago I remember a helpful computer guru who told me that he
could fix a problem I was having by actually taking control of my
computer, such that he would see my desktop on his monitor and then be
able to access my files and programs in exactly the same way I could.
I would like to be able to help others via the same mechanism, but how
is it done?

I hasten to add that the guru's computer and mine were not on the same
network. He was apparently able to access my computer via modem.

In addition to bobbie7's excellent list, you can also use the following tools:
* RealVNC (http://www.realvnc.com/): a widely used freeware that works
on multiple platforms.
* If both you and your client are using Windows XP, try Remote Network
Connection found under Start->All
Programs->Accessories->Communications.
* If you use MSN Messenger, there is a feature where your client can
invite you to connect to your their computer to diagnose problems.
