Question ID: 274262
Where can I go to find user friendly descriptions for the processes
shown running in Task Manager? ie:SMAA.exe, Smc.exe, ccApp.exe, etc.
Not just MS processes.

Hi marticm,

My research turned up no freeware. However I did find software you
can purchase which will not only give a complete user friendly
description of all processes running, but also gives you the option of
editing the names.

Descriptions with user-friendly names, for example: "Google -
Microsoft Internet Explorer" instead of "iexplore.exe"

Descriptions on many common processes, for example: spoolsv.exe ->
Windows spooler (Printer job handling)

Editable process names - assign your own names to common processes.

The software would definitely give you the ability to see what's what
in a clear fashion - taking all the mystery out of what processes are
running on your computer.

If you feel this answers your question, please post a clarification
and I'll be happy to provide more information.

Best regards,
tlspiegel

I have found sites that tell me what the common MS processes are that
are running. I discovered a site once that I can not now find that
gave fairly up to date information on outside "contributors" to the
lists of tasks running in Task Manager. This is what I am looking for.
I remember it having an alphabetical list that sometimes had dozens
listed under certain letters.

Dug deep enough in Ask Jeeves responses and finally found it.

there must be a tool that makes this easier, but you can run
'services.msc' and then look at all the 'started' services to see
what's running.
