I am having one heck of a time bridging the gap between Windows and
Macintosh. I recently set up a home network after being assured that
I'd be able to share a printer, but so far I have had no luck...

Please advise me on how to configure my Mac and PC so that both can
use my laser printer.

In one room I have a Samsung ML-1710 Laser Printer that is connected (by USB) to a
Dell Inspiron 4000 (running Windows 2000 Professional). The Dell is
on a Wireless (802.11b) network that is running from a Linksys
Wireless-B Broadband Router.

In another room, is an iMac that is running Mac OS 10.3 (Panther). It
is connected directly to the Router and the network
through an Ethernet cable.

The printer works fine with the PC. How do I print to this printer
from my Mac? (I've been told that it can be done by sending the print
job over the network, through the PC and into the printer but I've not
been able to make that happen).

I'd really appreciate someone walking me through this...

Hello.

These instructions are for Windows XP, but they should apply to your
2000 professional as well:
"More on printing to a Win XP shared printer," hosted by macosxhints.com:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20021230045509864

One of the comments indicates that a user was apply to the
instructions to a Windows 2K machine:
" Worked like a char(m) printing from an Ibook to Win2k Advanced Server Box"

-------------

search strategy:
windows mac "os x" "ip printing"

I hope this helps. If anything is unclear, or you have any questions,
or it doesn't work, please use the "request clarification" feature to
let me know. I will gladly return to the "drawing board" if
necessary. Thansk.

Hi, I probably should have mentioned that I had already found the page
you suggested before I posted my question to Google, and that the
directions listed there did not work for me -- that's what ultimately
caused me to offer money for a solution. The problem with the
macosxhints.com page seems to come in the VERY last step ("7. Select
your printer model."). There is nowhere to select a Samsung printer
from the drop-down menu.

I tried selecting "Generic printer" from the menu, and when I sent a
print job through this profile it LOOKED like it was going to print (a
window appeared which said "Spooling LPR job..." then "23%" then
"50%" then "64%" and then the laser printer in the other room began
humming...) but nothing came out.

I spoke with someone at Samsung and asked for a Driver. He emailed me
a file (InstallationKit(GDI_PCL).sit) which I installed. But he said
Samsung only supports USB printing for the ML-1710, and that while it
may be possible to print through TCP/IP (the method described in the
macosxhints.com page), he could not advise me how to do so.

So my question has thus become:
IS IT POSSIBLE to print from a Mac (RUNNING OS 10.3) To a SAMSUNG
ML-1710 Printer in another room (connected to a WINDOWS 2000 machine)
WITHOUT running 70 feet of USB cable? If so, how?

Hi Jdm,

I notice that Step #7 states:

"7) Select your printer model (Install Gimp-Print if you don't see a
ppd for your printer, restart print center and try again)."

Have you tried the Gimp-Print drivers?

Hi jdm78,

Have you installed the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) on your iMax?

CUPS homepage:
http://www.cups.org/

NEW! Printing sources have been updated for Mac OS X 10.3.

Hummer, no I haven't -- is CUPS necessary for my arrangement?

I haven't a clue, jdm78, but CUPS sure seems to come up alot on
mac/printer forums - I'd say it's definitely something to look into,
even if your present problem is solved. All the best, hummer
